Our Flight is a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 1982,The Press(Paperpast(National Library of New Zealand)),11-August-1983, page 3Our Flight top stake earner one of the very few fillies to have done so in the history of the race. Trained at Levin by Errol Skelton, the filly didn't show a great deal as a two-year-old but quickly proved herself as the champion three-year-old of the 1982–83 season. Travelling down to the Guineas meeting at Riccarton on the back of two impressive victories at Trentham, Our Flight was beaten by a nose in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas before asserting her dominance over the fillies in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas, 1000 Guineas the following Saturday. New Zealand Derby
The New Zealand Derby is a set-weights Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, run over a distance of 2,400 metres (12 furlongs) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. It is held on the first Saturday in March, as the opening day of Auckland Cup Week. The purse of the race in 2020 was $1 million. History The New Zealand Derby is an amalgamation of two races – the New Zealand Derby, run since 1860 at Riccarton, Christchurch; and the Great Northern Derby, run since 1875 at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland. The races were combined in 1973. Riccarton was awarded two 1,600 m races for three-year-olds in place of its Derby – the New Zealand 2000 Guineas and New Zealand 1000 Guineas. The Group One Levin Classic - formerly the Bayer Classic - is one of the premier races for three-year-old thoroughbreds in New Zealand. History The race, first run under the name Levin Turf Classic, was originally run at Levin Racecourse until that facility was closed as a racing venue in 1990 and the race was transferred to nearby Ōtaki. For more than a decade the race was sponsored by Bayer, and known as the Bayer Classic. For much of its history, the race was run at Levin and then Ōtaki on the last Friday in November. Concern began to grow in the 2000s about the race's close proximity to the New Zealand 2000 Guineas and New Zealand 1000 Guineas, both run in the second week in November. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. The Auckland Cup is an annual race held by the Auckland Racing Club (ARC). It is an Open Handicap for thoroughbred racehorses competed on the flat turf over 3200 metres (two miles) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. The race was formerly graded as a Group One (G1) event but as from 2022 is a Group 2. It was first contested in 1874. History The first meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was in May 1874. One of the events, run over a distance of miles, was named the Auckland Cup. This race was won by Mr. J Watt's three-year-old Batter.
