Otto Ozols
Otto Ozols (Jūrmala, 23 August 1970), pen name of Mārtiņš Barkovskis, is a Latvian columnist, writer and social activist. Ozols’ first book, the novel "Latvieši ir visur" ("Latvians are Everywhere") became a bestseller in 2011, having gone through 11 reprints since then. The book has been translated into Swedish as "Letternas Revansch" and into Russian as "Они повсюду". He has written two more books, "Theodorus. Deja ar ziloņzivi" ("Theodorus. Dancing with the Elephant Fish"), published in 2014 and described as "Europe's answer to Britain's James Bond and America's Jason Bourne", and "Neērtās patiesības" (Uncomfortable truths), a collection of Ozols’ opinion pieces and articles on Latvian politics, published in 2015. Jūrmala
Jūrmala (; "seaside") is a state city in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, about west of Riga. Jūrmala is a resort town stretching and is sandwiched between the Gulf of Riga and the Lielupe River. It has a stretch of white-sand beach and is the fifth-largest city in Latvia. While Latvia was under Occupation of the Baltic states, Soviet occupation, Jūrmala was a favorite holiday-resort and tourist destination for high-level Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Communist Party officials, particularly Leonid Brezhnev and Nikita Khrushchev. Although many amenities such as beach-houses and concrete hotels remain, some have fallen into disrepair. Catalan Way
The Catalan Way (), also known as the Catalan Way towards Independence (), was a human chain (politics), human chain in support of Catalan independence from Spain. It was organized by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) and supported by 14 nongovernmental groups. It took place in Catalonia on 11 September 2013, which is the National Day of Catalonia, known as ''Diada''. Catalonia's Department of the Interior estimated the number of participants at about 1.6 million. The human chain followed the ancient Via Augusta, from Le Perthus (France, Vallespir) to Vinaròs (Spain, Baix Maestrat). According to Carme Forcadell, president of the ANC at that time, it was "a symbol of the unity of Catalan people to achieve national sovereignty". The Baltic Way (; ; ) or Baltic Chain (also "Chain of Freedom") was a peaceful political demonstration that occurred on 23 August 1989. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning across the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which at the time were occupied and annexed by the USSR and had a combined population of approximately eight million. The central government in Moscow considered the three Baltic countries constituent republics of the Soviet Union. The demonstration originated in " Black Ribbon Day" protests held in the western cities in the 1980s. Maria Carme Forcadell i Lluís (; born 29 May 1955) is a Spanish politician from Catalonia. She is the former President of the Parliament of Catalonia, as well as a Catalan high school teacher, known for her Catalan independence activism.
