Otto Krusten
Otto Krusten (born Krustein, pseudonym Raudnõges; June 18, 1888 – February 23, 1937) was an Estonian caricaturist. Early life and education Otto Krusten was born in Muraste, the son of Jaan Krusten (1856–1927), a gardener at , and Triina Krusten (née Franso, 1858–1914). He studied at Ants Laikmaa's studio from 1905 to 1907, and then audited courses from 1907 to 1908 and from 1911 to 1913 at the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in Saint Petersburg. He was the brother of the writers and Erni Krusten, and the uncle of the literary scholar . Career Krusten worked in Tallinn in 1919 as an official of the Northern Estonian Art Protection Committee of the Ministry of Education. From 1922 to 1927, he worked in the editorial office of the newspaper '' Postimees'' in Tartu. Vello Agori (until 1935 Grigori Tõnisson, also known as Georg Tõnisson, pen name Gori; February 20, 1894 – October 7, 1944) was an Estonians, Estonian caricaturist. Early life and education Vello Agori's father Jüri (1844–?) was a janitor at Pärnu boys' high school, and his mother Anna (née Blumenfeldt, 1860–1955) was a laundress. He came from an Orthodox family and was baptized Grigori, but among the children he was called Gori, which was the origin of his future pseudonym as a cartoonist. He attended for two years, and then Pärnu city school. While still in school, he studied under the artist Rudolf Lepik (1881–1918). Career Initially, Gori submitted his caricatures widely, but they were not published. To support himself, he mainly worked as a bricklayer. Hugo Raudsepp (10 July 1883 – 15 September 1952) was an influential and prolific Estonian playwright and politician. Cody, Sprinchorn 2007, p. 428. In 1951 he was deported to the Irkutsk region by the Soviet authorities, where he died. Raun 2001, p. 186. Life Victor Paul Hugo Raudsepp was born the son of a distiller of Vaimastvere Manor. He first attended the local village and parish schools, then until 1900 the city school of Tartu. Subsequently, he worked as a clerk in a small retail businesses in Rakke Parish. After 1907, he worked as a literary critic, journalist and columnist in various newspapers. Between 1917 and 1920, he was politically active, acting as deputy mayor of Viljandi and working at the Secretariat of the Estonian Constituent Assembly. Thereafter, his political involvement waned. August Kitzberg
August Kitzberg ( in Laatre Parish, Governorate of Livonia, Russian Empire – 10 October 1927 in Tartu) was an Estonian writer. Life Until 1863, August Kitzberg was known as August Kits. He grew up in Niitsaadu farmstead in Penuja village, Abja Parish (1857–1871), where his brother, Jaak Kits, was a schoolteacher. He worked for a time in Viljandi and present-day Latvia before moving to Tartu in 1901, where he worked as a manager of the newspaper ''Postimees''. His early works consisted of comedies and humorous stories of village life. In Tartu, Kitzberg began working with Karl Menning at the Vanemuine Theatre, and his plays developed a component of social criticism. There is a monument and museum dedicated to Kitzberg in Karksi-Nuia. His play, ''Tuulte pöörises'', was chosen for the opening play of the Rakvere Theatre in 1940. ''Päevaleht'' was a newspaper published from 1905 until 1940 in Estonia. History and profile The first issue of ''Päevaleht'' was published on 16 December 1905 in Tallinn. In 1924, they expanded to a new building. Following the Soviet occupation, the newspaper was replaced by ''Noorte Hääl'' (published 1940–1941 and 1944–1990) in 1940. The last regular issue was printed on 26 July 1940. During the German occupation of Estonia in World War II, a revival of the old newspaper was attempted, but only a single issue was able to appear on August 29, 1941. On 1 February 1990, the newspaper ''Noorte Hääl'' became ''Päevaleht'' once again. The paper was digitized by the National Library of Estonia. Karl August Hindrey (15 August 1875 Abja Manor, Viljandi County – 9 January 1947) was an Estonian writer, journalist and cartoonist. He is mostly known through his psychological short stories and historical novels. He is also considered to be the founder of Estonian comics. From 1904, he worked in the editorial offices of the newspapers ''Postimees'' and ''Päevaleht''. He used the pseudonym Hoia Ronk, when he made contributions to the two newspapers mentioned above. He established two satirical magazines: ''Sädemed'' and ''Kratt''. During the Second World War, his activities were anti-Soviet.
