Ottawa Torah Institute
Ottawa Torah Institute was a yeshiva high school located in Ottawa, providing secular and Judaic education. Founded in 1982 as a boys' school, it was Ottawa's first full-time Jewish high school. In 1990 the high school expanded to include a girls' division, known as Machon Sarah. Graduates from Ottawa Torah Institute earned an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Reuven Bulka
Reuven Pinchas Bulka (; June 6, 1944 – June 27, 2021) was a Canadian rabbi, writer, broadcaster, and activist. He was the spiritual leader of Congregation Machzikei Hadas in Ottawa from 1967, first as Rabbi and then, starting in 2015, as Rabbi Emeritus. He served as co-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress from 2007 to 2009. Bulka's work with Kind Canada led to the recognition of the third week of February every year as "Kindness Week" in Canada. Biography Bulka was born to Rabbi Chaim Yaakov "Jacob" and Yehudis "Ida" (Alt) Bulka in London on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The family moved to the United States in 1946, where his father taught at Hebrew schools in Providence and Rockaway before becoming rabbi of a synagogue in The Bronx. Machzikei Hadas (literally translated from Hebrew as 'Supporters of the law') is a Modern Orthodox synagogue in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Congregation Machzikei Hadas, is open to all, regardless of level of observance. Machzikei Hadas is broadening its programming for young families in an attempt to boost membership. History The Jewish population of Ottawa grew from 20 families in 1889 to approximately 5,500 in 1961. The Machzikei Hadas congregation first began Shabbat services in a home on St. Patrick Street owned by Mr and Mrs Goldberg in 1907, paying 25 cents per week dues. The congregation rented a hall at the corner of Dalhousie and St. Patrick Street for one month covering Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and charging $1.00. Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim (also known as the Rabbinical Seminary of America) is an Orthodox yeshiva based in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, New York, United States. It is primarily an American, non-chasidic Haredi Talmudic yeshiva. The yeshiva is legally titled Rabbinical Seminary of America (RSA) but is often referred to as just Chofetz Chaim as that was the nickname of its namesake, Yisroel Meir Kagan. It has affiliate branches in Israel and North America. History Brooklyn The Yeshiva was established in 1933 by Rabbi Dovid Leibowitz, a great-nephew of the Chofetz Chaim.
