This is the discography of American soul singer Otis Redding. Studio albums Posthumous studio albums Otis Redding's death prompted a number of releases, including live albums and compilations. Four albums of mostly new material were released, but they are more like compilations than official studio releases. The first of these releases, ''The Dock of the Bay (album), The Dock of the Bay'', assembled by guitarist and producer Steve Cropper, is made up of previously released singles and b-sides as well as some album tracks and a few previously unissued recordings. The other three of these albums contain a greater amount of previously unreleased material. The posthumous collections are generally considered to be of good quality, which is unusual, as many posthumous releases by other artists receive unfavorable reviews. Otis Redding
Otis Ray Redding Jr. (September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967) was an American singer and songwriter. He is considered one of the greatest singers in the history of American popular music and a seminal artist in soul music and rhythm and blues. Nicknamed the " King of Soul", Redding's style of singing gained inspiration from the gospel music that preceded the genre. His singing style influenced many other soul artists of the 1960s. Redding was born in Dawson, Georgia, and at age two, moved to Macon. Redding quit school at age 15 to support his family, working with Little Richard's backing band, the Upsetters, and by performing in talent shows at the historic Douglass Theatre in Macon. In 1958, he joined Johnny Jenkins's band, the Pinetoppers, with whom he toured the Southern states as a singer and driver. ''The Dock of the Bay'' is the first of a number of posthumously released Otis Redding albums, and his seventh studio album. It contains a number of singles and B-sides dating back to 1965, as well as one of his best known songs, the posthumous hit "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". Recording of the album finished just two days before Redding's death in a plane crash on December 10, 1967. In 2003, the album was ranked number 161 on ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, maintaining the rating in a 2012 revised list. ''Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival'' is a live album recorded at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. A split artist release, it documents performances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience on side one and Otis Redding on side two. Release and charts Reprise Records released ''Historic Performances'' in the United States on August 26, 1970, less than a month before Hendrix died. It reached number 16 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and number 15 on the magazine's Top R&B Albums chart. The Recording Industry Association of America certified it as a "Gold" album, signifying sales over 500,000 copies. The album was not released in the United Kingdom. ''In Person at the Whisky a Go Go'' is a live album by Otis Redding, recorded at the Whisky a Go Go on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California in April 1966. It was released posthumously in 1968. The recording was made before Otis Redding attained crossover fame at the Monterey Pop Festival. The original issue of the album presented a selection of songs from the three shows. Another selection was released in 1993 under the title '' Good to Me: Live at the Whisky a Go Go, Vol. 2''. The complete live performances were released on October 21, 2016. ''Live in Europe'' is a live album from soul singer Otis Redding. It was Redding's first live album as well as the only live album released during his lifetime, issued exactly five months before his death on December 10, 1967. The album was recorded during the Stax/Volt tour of Europe and Redding is backed by Booker T. & the MG's. Recorded at the Olympia Theatre, Paris; March 21, 1967. The album is currently available on compact disc, digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch as part of the Atlantic & Atco Remasters Series done on Rhino Records. ''RPM'' ( and later ) was a Canadian music-industry publication that featured song and album charts for Canada. The publication was founded by Walt Grealis in February 1964, supported through its existence by record label owner Stan Klees. ''RPM'' ceased publication in November 2000. ''RPM'' stood for "Records, Promotion, Music". The magazine's title varied over the years, including ''RPM Weekly'' and ''RPM Magazine''. Canadian music charts ''RPM'' maintained several format charts, including Top Singles (all genres), Adult Contemporary, Dance, Urban, Rock/Alternative and Country Tracks (or Top Country Tracks) for country music. ''Love Man'' is the third posthumous album by American soul recording artist Otis Redding. It was released in June 1969 and featured songs Redding had recorded in 1967. The album was produced by Steve Cropper, and featured Booker T. and the M.G.'s. The album was a part of a series of posthumous releases by Atco Records after Redding's mainstream reputation skyrocketed in the wake of his 1967 death. ''Love Man'' charted at number 46 on the ''Billboard'' 200 and number 8 on the R&B Albums. Songs "Direct Me" has pop and gospel elements and a heavy tambourine-laden arrangement. On "I'm a Changed Man", Redding employed scat singing. The album's title track has a mid-tempo funk groove and lyrical references to the hippie culture that had begun to appreciate Redding at the time.
