Other Windsor, 2nd Earl Of Plymouth
Other Windsor, 2nd Earl of Plymouth (27 August 1679 – 26 December 1727) was a British peer, styled Lord Windsor from his father's death in 1684 to 1687. He was a Hanoverian Tory, supportive of the Hanoverian Succession. The son of Other Windsor, Lord Windsor and Elizabeth Turvey, he succeeded his grandfather as Earl of Plymouth in 1687. His unusual first name is a variant of Otho. Hanoverian Tory
Hanoverian Tories were Tory supporters of the Hanoverian Succession of 1714. At the time many Tories favoured the exiled Jacobite James Francis Edward Stuart to take the British and Irish thrones, while their arch rivals the Whigs supported the candidacy of George, Elector of Hanover. Background Following the Act of Settlement of 1701, the throne was intended to pass to the House of Hanover following the death of Queen Anne. However during the Tory government of Robert Harley after 1710, serious consideration was given by senior cabinet ministers led by Henry St. John to secure the throne for James instead. In preparation, army officers suspected of being pro-Hanover were purged from the service including both Whigs and Tories such as Henry Lumley. Earls Of Plymouth (1682 Creation)
Earl of Plymouth is a title that has been created three times: twice in the Peerage of England and once in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. History The first creation was in 1675 for Charles FitzCharles, 1st Earl of Plymouth, Charles FitzCharles, one of the dozens of illegitimate children of Charles II of England, King Charles II and one of a few by his mistress Catherine Pegge. He died without heirs in 1680, and the title became extinct. The second creation came in 1682 in favour of Thomas Hickman-Windsor, 7th Baron Windsor. The family descends from Sir Andrew Windsor, who fought at the Battle of Guinegate (1513), Battle of the Spurs in 1513, where he was knighted. In 1529 he was summoned to Parliament as Baron Windsor, ''of Stanwell in the Buckinghamshire, County of Buckingham''. Thomas Hickman-Windsor, 1st Earl Of Plymouth
Thomas Hickman-Windsor, 1st Earl of Plymouth, PC ( 1627 – 3 November 1687), was the son of Dixie Hickman and his wife Elizabeth Windsor, sister and heiress of Thomas Windsor, 6th Baron Windsor. He assumed the additional surname of Windsor and succeeded to the Windsor family's estate around Hewell Grange near Redditch in 1645. The same year he distinguished himself in the Battle of Naseby. Hickman-Windsor impressed King Charles I by relieving his garrison at High Ercall. Upon the Restoration, the title of Baron Windsor, which had last been held by his maternal uncle Thomas, was called out of abeyance in his favour, on 16 June 1660. From 1661 to 1663, he served as Governor of Jamaica. However, he actually spent only three months in Jamaica: according to Samuel Pepys his abrupt return to England caused a good deal of comment. The reason was apparently ill health. His one notable achievement as Governor had been to order the attack by Sir Christopher Myngs on Santiago de Cuba. ...
