Rhoden
Rhoden is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In 1302 the village is mentioned as Rode and in 1308 as Roden. The name means clearing, clearing site. Rhoden was laid out as a round village. The tithe to be paid by Rhoden to Halberstadt Abbey is already described in a document from 1242. The monastery granted fiefs in Rhoden to noble families, such as the von Berwinkel family, who owned an episcopal fief in the village from 1311. Hessen (Osterwieck)
Hessen, also Hessen am Fallstein, is a village in the Harz (district), Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Formerly part of the Aue-Fallstein municipal association, it was merged into the Osterwieck municipality on 1 January 2010. Geography The settlement is situated in the northern Harz foothills, south of the Großes Bruch lowland, at the northeastern rim of the Großer Fallstein heights. Located about northwest of Halberstadt, about half-way on the road to Wolfenbüttel, it borders on Winnigstedt-Mattierzoll, Lower Saxony in the north. History Possibly named after a local chieftain during the Saxon Wars of Charlemagne, a Water castle, water manor house at the site was first mentioned in an 1129 deed. Ilse (Oker)
The Ilse is a river of Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, Germany. It rises at about above sea level on the northern slopes of the Brocken. During its first few kilometres it flows as a narrow brook, almost invisible to the observer, down the side of the Brocken. Known here as the ''Verdeckte Ilse'' ("hidden Ilse") it gurgles its way under blocks of granite that hide the stream bed from above. The Ilse then rushes through the narrow Ilse valley, hemmed in to the east by the rugged, cross-topped Ilsestein, passes by Ilsenburg into the Harz Foreland, flows through Veckenstedt, Wasserleben, Osterwieck and Hornburg and discharges into the Oker near Börßum together with the ''Schiffgraben'' from the Großes Bruch. Its total length is around . Local folklore personifies the river as the beautiful ''Princess Ilse'', who has her home in the rocks of the Ilsestein. The Romanesque Road () is a scenic route in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt in central-east Germany. It is part of the Transromanica network, a major European Cultural Route since 2006. Route The route takes the form of a figure-of-eight, with a northern and a southern loop, and the city of Magdeburg as its centre, linking village churches, monasteries, cathedrals and castles built between 950 and 1250 and which therefore represent the emergence of Christianity in this part of Germany. Their Romanesque architecture can be recognised by its angular shapes and the round arches of the windows and doors as shown on the official Romanesque Road signs. German Timber-Frame Road
The German Timber-Frame Road () is a German tourist route leading from the river Elbe in the north to the Black Forest and Lake Constance in the south. Numerous cities and towns each with examples of the vernacular Timber framing, timber-framed houses traditional to the Holy Roman Empire, German states are situated along the road. The route is divided into seven sections, each of which follow the traditional states of Germany, areas of: Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Hesse, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg. History In 1975, the 'ARGE Historische Fachwerkstädte e.V.' (Association of Historic Timber-Framed Towns) was founded. Its aim is to preserve the cultural heritage of a huge variety of different styles of half-timbering in Germany. Hildegrim Of Châlons
Hildegrim ( – 19 June 827) was Bishop of Châlons from 804 to 810 and the second abbot of Werden Abbey, after his elder brother Ludger, from 809 until his death. Life Like his brother Ludger, Hildegrim was of Christian Frisian noble descent. He presumably stayed at the Benedictine abbey of Monte Cassino and received a thorough liberal arts education at the Utrecht Cathedral School, founded by Bishop Gregory, and in York under Alcuin. Mentioned as deacon in 793, he was ordained a priest three years later. About 804 he became Bishop of Châlons. Upon Ludger's death in 809, he succeeded him as Abbot of Werden and Helmstedt in 809.
