Ossola
The Ossola (; ), also Valle Ossola or Val d'Ossola (; ), is an area of Northwest Italy situated to the north of Lago Maggiore. It lies within the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Its principal river is the Toce, and its most important town Domodossola. Etymology There are many etymological claims as to the origins of the name ''Ossola'', the most likely being Gaulish, Celtic for "high lands". The German and Walser names for the valley translate to "valley of the ash trees". Geography Ossola is composed of one main valley (the Ossola proper) and seven side valleys: Valle Anzasca, Anzasca, Valle Antrona, Antrona, Val Bognanco, Bognanco, Val Divedro, Divedro, Valle Antigorio, Antigorio, Val Formazza, Formazza, Valle Isorno, Isorno and Val Vigezzo, Vigezzo. Province Of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola
The province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (, ) is a Provinces of Italy, province in the Piedmont region of Italy. It was created in 1992 through the fusion of three geographical areas which had previously been part of the province of Novara. The area flanking the western shore of Lake Maggiore, Verbano (or Lago Maggiore) forms the eastern part of the province; Lake Orta, Cusio (or Lago d’Orta) and its environs form the southern part; while the north and west of the province consist of the Ossola, a region of Alps, Alpine mountains and valleys. Domodossola
Domodossola (; ) is a city and (municipality) in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the region of Piedmont, northern Italy. It was also known as Oscela, Oscella, Oscella dei Leponzi, Ossolo, Ossola Lepontiorum, and Domo d'Ossola (due to its position in the Ossola valley), or simply Domo. The Peruvian aviation pioneer, Jorge Chávez, died here in 1910 in an airplane crash. Geography Domodossola is situated at the confluence of the Bogna and Toce Rivers and is home to 18,300 people. The Val Formazza () is a valley in the Lepontine Alps, in the Piedmontese Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Italy. Ossolano
Ossolano is the Western Lombard dialect spoken in the Ossola valley, Northwest Italy. It is an umbrella name for a number of dialects spoken in the main Ossola valley and the other seven valleys and their subvalley that spread from it. As the territory is very mountainous, many different variations exist. They are mostly intelligible to one another, save for some specific words that seem to have arisen only in some villages and not others. For instance, "cat" in mainstream Ossolano is , but in Mozziese it is (the "cinder-one", due to domesticated mountain cats' habit to roll up in front of the fire in mountain huts). Monte Massone
The Monte Massone, at an elevation of , is a mountain of the Pennine Alps in North-western Italy. Geography The mountain belongs to the water divide between Strona Valley (South) and Ossola Valley (North). The southern slopes of Monte Massone are mainly grassy, while its North face is rocky, very steep and covered by shrubs. From Ornavasso, located on its North foothill, the summit can't be seen because is hidden by a subsummit named ''Eyehorn'' (2,131 m). On Monte Massone stands a metallic cross 4 ms high bearing a bell, which was located there in 1921. Not far from it, on the Northern slopes of the mountain, can be seen some trenches dug before the 1st World War and belonging to the Linea Cadorna. At 1,900 m, on the Valle Strona side of Monte Massone, there is a small plateau which hosts three tiny lakes called ''Laghetti'', where in the past local farmers tried to implement a project of land reclamation. Villadossola (Piedmontese ''Vila d'Òssola'') is a town and ''comune'' of the Val d’Ossola in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont, northern Italy, some northeast of Turin. It stands just south of Domodossola, to the west of the Toce, and at the mouth of the picturesque Valle Antrona, one of the seven side valleys of the Val d’Ossola. Toce
The Toce (; ; ) is a river in Piedmont, Italy, which stretches the length of the Val d'Ossola from the Swiss border to Lake Maggiore into which it debouches near Fondotoce in the commune of Verbania. The river is long and is formed in the upper Val Formazza by the confluence of a number of torrents in the plain of Riale. Geography The source of one of these, the Gries, is situated on the Italian southern side of the Gries Pass; another forms beneath the Passo di San Giacomo, others flow from little Alpine lakes such as Lago Castel and Lago di Sabbione. South of La Frua the water of the river plummets over the Cascata del Toce into the Formazza Valley, through which it flows before transversing Valle Antigorio after another series of cascades.
