Soon after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States Government began detaining people who fit the profile of the suspected hijackers: mostly male, Arabic, or Muslim noncitizens. According to Justice Berman, they had arrested 1,182 people as of November 5, 2001. By late November 2001, more than 1,200 people had been detained. A document made and published by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) contained information about the detainees. The office of the Inspector general released a report in June of 2003 that stated: "The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) detained 762 aliens as a result of the PENTTBOM investigation". Of those 762 people, 24 had an immigration violation prior to the September 11th attacks. The September 11 attacks, also known as 9/11, were four coordinated Islamist terrorist suicide attacks by al-Qaeda against the United States in 2001. Nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners, crashing the first two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the third into the Pentagon (headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense) in Arlington County, Virginia. Mohamed Atta (1 September 196811 September 2001) was an Egyptian terrorist hijacker for al-Qaeda. Ideologically a Pan-Islamism, pan-Islamist, he was the ringleader of the September 11 attacks and served as the Aircraft hijacking, hijacker-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11, which he crashed into the North Tower of the original World Trade Center (1973–2001), World Trade Center as part of the coordinated suicide attacks. Aged 33, he was the oldest of the Hijackers in the September 11 attacks#Hijackers, 19 hijackers who took part in the mission. Mohammed Haydar Zammar ( ''Muḥammad Ḥaydar Zammār'') (born 1961) is a Syrian-German militant who served as an important al-Qaida recruiter, and is currently a member of the Islamic State. He claims to have recruited many of the organizers of the September 11 attacks. He was detained in Far'Falastin. Early history Zammar was born in Syria to a religious Muslim family.
