Ortúzar Commission
Commission for the Study of the New Political Constitution of the Republic of Chile, commonly known as the Ortúzar Commission, was a body established in 1973 by the Government Junta of Chile (1973), Military Government Junta that ruled the country during the Military dictatorship of Chile (1973–1990), military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, following the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, coup against the Socialist President Salvador Allende. Its purpose was to draft the preliminary project for the Chilean Constitution of 1980, 1980 Constitution. It met from September 24, 1973, to October 5, 1978. Members The name "Ortúzar Commission" is due to its chairman, Enrique Ortúzar, Enrique Ortúzar Escobar, who previously served as Ministry of Justice (Chile), Minister of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Minister of Foreign Affairs during the administration of Jorge Alessandri. The Government Junta of Chile () was the military junta established to rule Chile during the military dictatorship that followed the overthrow of President Salvador Allende in the 1973 Chilean coup d'état. The Government Junta was the executive and legislative branch of government until 17 December 1974, when Augusto Pinochet was formally declared President of Chile. After that date, it functioned strictly as a legislative body until the return to democracy in 1990.
