Orrin Keepnews
Orrin Keepnews (March 2, 1923 – March 1, 2015) was an American jazz writer and record producer known for founding Riverside Records and Milestone Records, for freelance work, and for his work at other labels. Biography Early life Keepnews was born to a Jewish family in The Bronx, New York, on March 2, 1923. His mother was a public school teacher and his father worked for the Department of Welfare. Keepnews graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English in 1943. Subsequently, he was involved in bombing raids over Japan in the final months of World War II, before returning for graduate studies at Columbia in 1946. While working as an editor for the book publishers Simon & Schuster, Keepnews moonlighted as editor of ''The Record Changer'', a small jazz magazine, after fellow Columbia graduate Bill Grauer became its owner in 1948. Orrin Tucker
Robert Orrin Tucker (February 17, 1911 – April 9, 2011) was an American bandleader born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, whose theme song was " Drifting and Dreaming". His biggest hit was "Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!" (1939), sung by vocalist "Wee" Bonnie Baker. He founded his first band while a college student at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Career Orrin Tucker's big band, which he formed in 1933, specialized in a more relaxed style of swing, which was somewhat less complex than the music of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and other famous contemporary bandleaders of the day. Tucker's orchestra produced more than 70 recordings. Tucker's most successful hit was the 1939 recording of the 1917 song "Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!," featuring the singer Wee Bonnie Baker. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. Orin Starn
Orin Starn is an anthropologist and writer at Duke University. He has chaired the Duke Cultural Anthropology department, directed the Duke Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and been the faculty director of the Duke Human Rights Center. Starn teaches courses about Latin America, Native American culture and politics, human rights, and sports and society, among other issues. He received Duke University's Robert B. Cox Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004 and was awarded the Sally Dalton Robinson Distinguished Professorship in 2005. Starn has been researching the experience of Amazon warehouse workers. Orrin Porter Rockwell
Orrin Porter Rockwell (June 28, 1813 or June 25, 1815 – June 9, 1878) was a figure of the Wild West period of American history. A lawman in the Utah Territory, he was nicknamed ''Old Port'', ''The Destroying Angel of Mormondom'' and ''Modern-day Samson''. Rockwell served as a bodyguard, and was a personal friend, of Latter Day Saint movement founder Joseph Smith. After Smith's death in 1844, Rockwell became a bodyguard of his successor, Brigham Young, and traveled with him and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) to the Salt Lake Valley in the present-day U.S. state of Utah. Orrin M. Peck (April 13, 1860 – January 20, 1921) was an American painter. He was known for his landscape and portrait oil paintings. Peck was active in San Francisco; London, England; and Munich, Germany. Early life and education Orrin M. Peck was born April 13, 1860, in Hobart, Delaware County, New York. In 1863 when he was young, the family moved to San Francisco, California via ship around the Isthmus of Panama. Orin O'Brien
Orin O'Brien (born 1935) is an American double bassist. She was a member of the New York Philharmonic, joining in 1966 under the direction of Leonard Bernstein; she was the first woman to join the orchestra. O’Brien retired from the Philharmonic in 2021 after a 55-year career. She was on the college faculty at the Juilliard School (where she was co-chair of the double bass department from 1992 to 2002), Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes College The New School for Music.
