Orkdal Municipality
Orkdal is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in Trøndelag Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 2020 when it joined Orkland Municipality. It was part of the Orkdalen Districts of Norway, region. The administrative centre of the municipality was the city of Orkanger. Some of the notable villages in the municipality included Kjøra, Geitastrand, Gjølme, Thamshavn, Fannrem, Vormstad, Svorkmo, and Hoston, Trøndelag, Hoston. At the time of its dissolution in 2020, the municipality was the 188th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Orkdal Municipality was the 96th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 12,086. Orkdal Church
Orkdal Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located in the village of Fannrem, about south of the town of Orkanger. It is the main church for the Orkdal parish as well as the seat of the Orkdal prosti (deanery) within the Diocese of Nidaros. The gray, stone, neo-Gothic church was built in a long church design in 1893 using plans drawn up by the architect Carl Julius Bergstrøm (1828–1898). The church seats about 450 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1533, but the church was built long before that time. The church site has been occupied for many centuries. The church was built on the old medieval ''Gryting'' farm, so historically, the church was known as ''Gryting Church''. Orkdal IL
Orkdal Idrettslag is a Norwegian sports club from Fannrem, Sør-Trøndelag. It has sections for association football, team handball, frisbee, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing and biathlon. History The club traces its roots back to 15 October 1903, when the skiing club ''SL Prøven'' was founded. It changed its name to ''IL Prøven'' in 1908 and then ''Orkdal IL'' in 1926. It was now a multi-sports club. In 1934, ''Orkdal IL'' merged with the gymnastics club ''Fannrem TF'' and took the name ''Orkdal TIL''. In 1945, this club merged with the former AIF club ''Orkdal AIL'' to finally assume the name Orkdal IL. The club mainly operated at the multi-use stadium Fannremsmoen and the skiing area Knyken. In 1993, Orkdal IL was one of the leading ski jumping clubs in the world, sporting a three-man team of Bjørn Myrbakken, Roar Ljøkelsøy and Terje Nyhus. Battle Of Orkdal
The Battle of Orkdal was, according to Heimskringla, the first attempt at resistance against Harald Fairhair's conquests in Trøndelag. Heimskringla said Harald was massacring and burning his way through Trøndelag, without any opposition, until he came down to Orkdal. Here, King Gryting gathered a large group of men to make a stand against the invading forces. Harald was victorious and Gryting was taken prisoner while a large part of his army were killed. Orkdal Fjord
or is a branch of the Trondheim Fjord located in Orkland Municipality and Skaun Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The Orkdal Fjord starts between Viggja village on the southeast side of the fjord and the village of Geitastrand on the northwest side of the fjord. This is where the Korsfjorden part of the Trondheim Fjord splits into two separate branches; Gaulosen that stretches towards the southeast and the Orkdal Fjord that stretches about towards the southwest to Orkanger and the mouth of the Orkla river at the end of the fjord. For most of its length the fjord is just over wide. Much of the land on either side of the fjord is quite steep and the gradient often continues into the sea with the fjord reaching depths in excess of just a short distance from the shore in some places. Orkdalen
Orkdalen () is a valley and a traditional Norwegian district in Trøndelag county, Norway. In the early Viking Age, before King Harald Fairhair, the Orkla Valley was also a petty kingdom. The valley begins in the high Dovrefjell mountains and creates a deep, narrow valley. As the river progresses, the valley widens and flattens out. From Rennebu northwards, the valley is fairly heavily populated with good farmland. At the mouth of the river (the north end of the valley) is the town of Orkanger, the largest population centre in the valley. The district encompasses Rennebu Municipality and Orkland Municipality, both of which surround the Orkla River in the valley. Oppdal Municipality and Skaun Municipality are often traditionally counted as a parts of the district also even though they lie outside the actual valley of the river Orkla.
