Orion Basketball Club is a Rwandan semi-professional basketball team based in Kigali. They play in the Rwanda Basketball League The Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) (formerly the National Basketball League Rwanda) is the top professional basketball league in Rwanda. Its season usually runs from November to September. The winners of the NBL season qualify for the BAL Qualif ... (RBL). Orion was founded in 2022 and started playing in the Division 2 and was immediately promoted to the top flight league. The club was founded by James Mutabazi. Other investors include Jarred Harrington. The name of the club means "the rising and shining of the Star". Rwanda Basketball League
The Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) (formerly the National Basketball League Rwanda) is the top professional basketball league in Rwanda. Its season usually runs from November to September. The winners of the NBL season qualify for the BAL Qualifying Tournaments, qualifiers for the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The league currently consists of 10 teams, most of them being from the country's capital Kigali. The current champion of the RBL are APR BBC, APR, who are the league’s most decorated team with a record 15 championships. Other notable teams are REG BBC, REG and their rivals Patriots BBC, Patriots, who have been powerhouses in recent years. Since the 2021–22 season, the FERWABA also organises the Rwanda Basketball League Division 2, RBL Division 2 to which the bottom two teams of the RBL relegate. Rwandan Heroes Cup
The Heroes' Cup, also known as the Heroes' Day Tournament, is an annual basketball cup competition for the premier teams in Rwanda. The Heroes Cup tournaments are organised by their respective federations in partnership with the Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour (CHENO). The final of the cup is played each year on Heroes' Day#Rwanda, National Heroes' Day on February 1. 2021–22 RBL Season
The 2021–22 RBL season is the 1st season of the Rwanda Basketball League under its new name. The season began on March 11, 2022 and ended September 19, 2022. The defending champions REG repeated and won their third league title, after defeating rivals Patriots in the finals. 2023 RBL Season
The 2023 RBL season was the second season of the Rwanda Basketball League under its current name, while the top-level competition has been organised by the FERWABA for a longer time. The season began on 12 January 2023 with the regular season. The playoffs began on 23 August and ended on 9 September 2023. APR won a record-extending 14th national title, following a clean sweep of defending champions REG in the finals. With their victory, APR ended a 14-year title drought. APR guard Jean Jacques Nshobozwabyosenumukiza was named Playoffs MVP. As champions, APR quaified directly for the 2024 BAL season. The 2024 RBL season was the 3rd season of the Rwanda Basketball League under its current name, while the top-level competition has been organised by the FERWABA for a longer time. The regular season began on 9 February and ended on 23 August 2024. The playoffs began on 30 August and ended on 23 September 2024. APR won its record-extending fifteenth national title after their finals win over Patriots. Team changes Regular season The number of teams in the regular season was decreased from twelve to ten. This season, two teams are relegated to the Division 2. The 2025 RBL season will be the 48th season of the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL), and the 4th season of the league under its current name. The league is organized by the FERWABA. The regular season will begin on January 24, 2025, and ten teams will participate. APR are the defending champions, after having won the previous two championships. The champions of the RBL qualify directly for the 2026 BAL season. Team changes Azomco Global Flame was promoted as the champions of the Rwanda Basketball League Division 2. Keplerians were ineligible to promote, as it is a sister club of Kepler BBC, and thus Flame Basketball Club was given the promotion spot.
