Oregon Route 103
Oregon Route 103 is a highway in the U.S. state of Oregon that runs between Jewell Junction and Jewell. It is also known as the Fishhawk Falls Highway No. 103 (see Oregon highways and routes), named after nearby Fishhawk Falls. Route description The southern terminus of Oregon Route 103 is at a junction with U.S. Route 26 at Jewell Junction near Mishawaka and Elsie. OR 103 continues north, passing through Pope Corner, Vinemaple, and Tideport, and ending at a junction with Oregon Route 202 in Jewell. History The Fishhawk Falls Highway No. 103 was established as a secondary highway on November 17, 1941. On September 19, 2002, Oregon Route 103 was assigned to the Fishhawk Falls Highway. Jewell is an unincorporated community in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. The logging community is located at the junction of Oregon Route 103 and Oregon Route 202, near the Nehalem River. History Jewell was named after Marshall Jewell, United States Postmaster General from 1874–1876. A post office was established in Jewell in 1874 and closed in 1967. Natural history Jewell is situated near the Clatsop State Forest. Jewell Meadows Wildlife Area is a wildlife preserve near Jewell run by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. It is known for its Roosevelt elk. The world's largest Bigleaf Maple, as determined by the National Register of Big Trees, with a height of 101 feet and a spread of 90 feet, was located near Jewell, but fell during a windstorm in 2011. Fishhawk Falls
Fishhawk Falls, is a waterfall located along the Fishhawk Creek in Clatsop County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It totals 72 feet fall in one wide cascade and is the centerpiece attraction of the Lee Wooden Fishhawk Falls trailhead and Recreation Site. Fishhawk Falls is located a mile from the Jewell Meadows Wildlife Area off of Highway 202 between Jewell and Astoria. The Fishhawk Falls runs over exposed stacked basalt columns making a dike that is of identical composition to the Columbia River basalt. It forms part of a basalt flow, like those at Otter Rock and Hug Point, that rank among the longest on earth, approximately 300 miles from eastern Oregon and Washington. Elsie, Oregon
Elsie is an unincorporated community in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. It is located in the Northern Oregon Coast Range, west of the junction of Oregon Route 103 and U.S. Route 26 where the roads cross the Nehalem River. Elsie was named after Elsie Foster, who was a relative of George Gragg, the first postmaster. Elsie post office was established in 1892 and closed in 1943. Camp 18 is a restaurant and logging museum in Elsie. The restaurant is built in the style of a log cabin, using local timber. The building includes an 85-foot ridge pole and front doors that weigh 500 pounds each.
