Ordbog Over Det Danske Sprog
''Ordbog over det danske Sprog'' ( da, Dictionary of the Danish language) or ''ODS'' is a comprehensive dictionary of the Danish language, describing its usage from c. 1700 to 1955 in great detail. The ODS was published in 28 volumes between 1919 and 1956 by the Society for Danish Language and Literature (''Det Danske Sprog- og Litteraturselskab''). Five supplementary volumes were published between 1992 and 2005. The project was begun by Danish linguist Verner Dahlerup. Since 1915, the project was led by linguist Lis Jacobsen. A digitized version of the ''ODS'' has been maintained by the Society for Danish Language and Literature since November 2005. This organization also maintains a sister dictionary '' Den Danske Ordbog'' covering Danish language use since 1950. Danish Language
Danish (; , ) is a North Germanic language spoken by about six million people, principally in and around Denmark. Communities of Danish speakers are also found in Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the northern German region of Southern Schleswig, where it has minority language status. Minor Danish-speaking communities are also found in Norway, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Argentina. Along with the other North Germanic languages, Danish is a descendant of Old Norse, the common language of the Germanic peoples who lived in Scandinavia during the Viking Era. Den Store Danske Encyklopædi
''Den Store Danske Encyklopædi'' (''The Great Danish Encyclopedia'') is the most comprehensive contemporary Danish language encyclopedia. The 20 volumes of the encyclopedia were published successively between 1994 and 2001; a one-volume supplement was published in 2002 and two index volumes in 2003. The work comprises 115,000 articles, ranging in size from single-line cross references to the 130-page entry on Denmark. The articles were written by a staff of about 4,000 academic experts led by editor-in-chief Jørn Lund. Articles longer than a few dozen lines are signed by their authors. Many articles are illustrated. Lis Jacobsen
Elisabeth (Lis) Jacobsen, née Rubin, (29 January 1882 - 18 June 1961) was a Danish philologist, archaeologist and writer. She is remembered first and foremost for her research and publications on the history of the Danish language but she was also an expert runologist who published a comprehensive analysis of all known runic inscriptions in Denmark. From 1911, Jacobsen played a major role in all fields of research related to the Danish language. Early life and education Born on 29 January 1882 in Copenhagen, Jacobsen grew up in a rich Jewish family, the daughter of Marcus Rubin (1854–1923), director of the National Bank of Denmark, and his wife Kaja Davidsen (1854–1909). After matriculating from N. Zahle's School in 1900, she qualified as a schoolteacher in 1903. The same year she married the historian Jacob Peter Jacobsen. Ludvig Holberg
Ludvig Holberg, Baron of Holberg (3 December 1684 – 28 January 1754) was a writer, essayist, philosopher, historian and playwright born in Bergen, Norway, during the time of the Dano-Norwegian dual monarchy. He was influenced by Humanism, the Enlightenment and the Baroque. Holberg is considered the founder of modern Danish and Norwegian literature. He is best known for the comedies he wrote in 1722–1723 for the Lille Grønnegade Theatre in Copenhagen. Holberg's works about natural and common law were widely read by many Danish law students over two hundred years, from 1736 to 1936. Studies and teaching Holberg was the youngest of six brothers. Dansk Sprognævn ( "Danish Language Council") is the official regulatory body of the Danish language as a part of the Danish Ministry of Culture and is located in Bogense. It was established in 1955. The committee has three main objectives: * to follow the development of the language * to answer inquiries about the Danish language and its use * to update the official Danish dictionary, '' Retskrivningsordbogen'' The working members of the committee follow written and broadcast media, read books to keep track of new words and record their usage. New words which have appeared enough in print and speech to be considered notable are added to ''Retskrivningsordbogen'', which all government institutions and schools are obliged by law to follow.
