Castlewood is a city in Hamlin County, South Dakota, United States. It is part of the Watertown, South Dakota Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 698 at the 2020 census. and was estimated to be 707 in 2022. History Castlewood was platted in 1881 when the railroad was extended to that point. The city was named Castlewood after a place mentioned in the 1857 novel '' The Virginians'' by William Makepeace Thackeray. A post office has been in operation in Castlewood since September 27, 1882. A destructive EF2 tornado hit the town on May 12, 2022, destroying several structures, damaging homes, and injuring one person. Geography Castlewood is located along the Big Sioux River. Castlewood is a census-designated place (CDP) in western Russell County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,045 at the 2010 census, a small increase from the 2,036 reported in 2000. Castlewood was an incorporated town from 1991 to 1997, when it reverted to unincorporated status. History The community was originally named Castle's Woods, as the land in the immediate area had once belonged to Jacob Castle, a frontiersman in the likes of Daniel Boone. Castle purchased the land from the Shawnee Indians, for very little in trade, reportedly just a "hound dog, a knife, and a shot of whiskey". As a "Long Hunter", Castle spent long periods of time in the wilderness on hunting expeditions. There he befriended the Indians that inhabited the land in the Castlewood area. He married a Shawnee woman by the name of Gliding Swan, and they produced many children. Castlewood State Park
Castlewood State Park is a public recreation area and Missouri state park occupying which straddles the Meramec River in St. Louis County, Missouri. The most visited section of the state park lies on the north side of the Meramec; the park acreage on the south side of the river is accessed from Lone Elk County Park and includes the World Bird Sanctuary. History Lincoln Beach In the early 20th century, the area of the park was a developed resort town, Lincoln Beach. Lincoln Beach existed from about 1915 into the 1940s, with its highest popularity in the 1920s. Castlewood Canyon State Park is a Colorado state park near Franktown, Colorado. The park retains a unique part of Colorado's history, the remains of Castlewood Canyon Dam. Visitors can still see the remnants and damage from that dam which burst in 1933. The event sent a wave of water all the way to downtown Denver resulting in a flood.
