South Orange, New Jersey
South Orange, officially the Township of South Orange Village, is a suburban township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the village's population was 16,198, reflecting a decline of 766 (4.5%) from the 16,964 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 574 (+3.5%) from the 16,390 counted in the 1990 Census. Seton Hall University is located in the township. "The time and circumstances under which the name South Orange originated will probably never be known," wrote historian William H. Oliver Campbell
Oliver Edward Michael Campbell (February 25, 1871 – July 11, 1953) was an American male tennis player who won the three consecutive singles titles at the U.S. Championships from 1890 through 1892. Education Campbell was educated at Columbia College, graduating in 1891 and was posthumously inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. Career For over a century, Campbell had the honour of being the youngest male player to win the U.S. singles title. He did it as a 19-year, 6 months and 9 days old student in 1890. That record went to fellow American Pete Sampras, 19 years and 28 days, when he won the title in 1990. Campbell defended his title in the challenge round matches in 1891, defeating Clarence Hobart, and in 1892, defeating Fred Hovey, but did not defend it in 1893 and thereby defaulted the title to Robert Wrenn. The Norfolk Championships also known as the Norfolk County Lawn Tennis Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tournament originally founded in 1906. It was held in multiple locations such as Norwich, Great Yarmouth, and Cromer, England until 1971. History The Norfolk County Lawn Tennis Championships were established in 1906. The tournament was staged continuously until 1915 just after the start of World War I. The tournament resumed in 1919 that was staged by the Cromer Lawn Tennis Club, until 1939 when it ceased for seven years until after World War II. Howard Taylor (tennis)
Howard Taylor (November 23, 1865 – November 26, 1920) was a tennis player from the United States. Taylor performed well at the U.S. National Championships, reaching the Challenge Round in 1884 (beating Joseph Clark, Percy Knapp and William Thorne before losing to Richard Sears). Taylor reached the all comers final in 1886 (beating James Dwight and Clark before losing to Robert Livingston Beeckman). He reached the all comers final in 1887 (beating Oliver Campbell before losing to Henry Slocum). Slocum beat him in the all comers final again in 1888. Taylor also won the doubles title in 1889 alongside Slocum, finishing runner-up in 1886 and 1887. Taylor attended Harvard University, where he was an NCAA singles and doubles champion in 1883. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Robert Livingston Beeckman (April 15, 1866 – January 21, 1935) was an American stockbroker, sportsman, and politician who served as the 52nd Governor of Rhode Island. Early life Beeckman was born on April 15, 1866 in New York City, New York. He was the son of Gilbert Livingston Beeckman (1823–1874) and Margaret Atherton (née Foster) Beeckman (1832–1904). His sister, Katherine Livingston Beeckman, was married to Louis Lasher Lorillard, the son of Pierre Lorillard III, and another sister, Martha Beeckman, was married to New York banker Amos Tuck French. His family ancestry can be traced back to Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam dating to 1654.
