Opposition (South Australia)
The Opposition in the Australian state of South Australia comprises the largest party or coalition of parties not in Government. The Opposition's purpose is to hold the Government to account and constitute a "Government-in-waiting" should the existing Government fall. To that end, a Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Ministers for the various government departments question the Premier and Ministers on Government policy and administration, and formulate the policy the Opposition would pursue in Government. It is sometimes styled " His Majesty's Loyal Opposition" to demonstrate that although it opposes the Government, it remains loyal to the King. The current Leader of the Opposition is South Australian Liberal Party Leader David Speirs, and John Gardner is the Deputy Leader. The Liberal Party of Australia (South Australian Division), commonly known as the South Australian Liberals, is the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia. It was formed as the Liberal and Country League (LCL) in 1932 and became the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945. It retained its Liberal and Country League name before changing to its current name in 1974. David Speirs
David James Speirs (born December 15, 1984) is an Australian politician. He has been a Liberal member of the South Australian House of Assembly since the 2014 state election and leader of the Liberal Party since 19 April 2022. He represented Bright until 2018 and then Black following a redistribution of electoral boundaries. Speirs served as the Minister for Environment and Water in the Marshall Ministry between March 2018 and March 2022. Background and early career Speirs was born in Galloway, Scotland, where he was schooled at Kirkcolm Primary School and Stranraer Academy. John Anthony William Gardner is an Australian politician representing the seat of Morialta in the South Australian House of Assembly for the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia since the 2010 election. Gardner served as the Minister for Education in the Marshall Ministry between March 2018 and March 2022. The Shadow ministry of David Speirs is the Liberal Party opposition since April 2022, opposing the Malinauskas government of the Labor Party in the Parliament of South Australia.
