Operation Shenandoah II
Operation Shenandoah II was a security operation conducted during the Vietnam War by the U.S. 1st Infantry Division to secure and repair Highway 13, South Vietnam from 29 September to 19 November 1967. Background For the 1967–1968 dry season, II Field Force, Vietnam planned to mount a large-scale offensive to cut the three main infiltration routes into III Corps from Cambodia. In order to build up the necessary forces near the Cambodian border and sustain their operations Highway 13 needed to be opened and secured. Meanwhile, Central Office for South Vietnam (COSVN) commander General Trần Văn Trà pursued a strategy of attrition using his People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and Viet Cong (VC) forces to attack U.S. military units to cause as many casualties as possible hoping that the Americans would conclude that the war was too costly and withdraw from South Vietnam. III Corps (South Vietnam)
III Corps () was a corps of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), the army of the nation state of South Vietnam that existed from 1955 to 1975. It was one of four corps in the ARVN, and oversaw the region of the country surrounding the capital Saigon. III Corps was activated in September 1959 and controlled the country south of Phan Thiet excluding Saigon which was controlled by the Capital Military District (CMD). In 1962, President Ngô Đình Diệm decided to split the Corps into two, the former III Corps area being reduced in size to cover the area northeast of Saigon and the newly created IV Corps (South Vietnam), IV Corps taking over the west and southwest. 2nd Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 2nd Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment in the United States Army that has served for more than two hundred years. It was constituted on 12 April 1808 as the 6th Infantry and consolidated with 4 other regiments in 1815 to form the present unit. Michelin Rubber Plantation
The Michelin Rubber Plantation was a rubber plantation in Vietnam. It was located near Dầu Tiếng District in Bình Dương Province, 72 km northwest of Saigon. The plantation was established by the Michelin company in 1925 and at it was the largest rubber plantation in Vietnam. Michelin established Dau Tieng Rubber Company in 1917, according to Binh Duong News. The plantation was located approximately halfway between the Cambodian border and Saigon and so was an important base and staging area for the Viet Cong (VC) and later the PAVN. The plantation was an important source of revenue for the South Vietnamese government and it was believed that the Michelin Company paid off the VC in order to keep the plantation operating during the war.
