Operation Sail
Operation Sail refers to a series of sailing events held to celebrate special occasions and features sailing vessels from around the world. Each event is coordinated by Operation Sail, Inc., a non-profit organization established in 1961 by U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and must be approved by the United States Congress. Often referred to as OpSail or Op Sail, the event has the goals of promoting good will and cooperation between countries while providing sail training and celebrating maritime history. It is also sometimes erroneously referred to as "Tall Ships". While the tall ships form the centerpiece of the event, smaller sailing vessels also participate. Op Sail events, when scheduled, are run concurrently with the annual International Naval Review, which features present-day warships from various navies. USS Randolph (CV-15)
USS ''Randolph'' (CV/CVA/CVS-15) was one of 24 s built during and following World War II for the United States Navy. The second US Navy ship to bear the name, she was named for Founding Father Peyton Randolph, president of the First Continental Congress. ''Randolph'' was commissioned in October 1944, and served in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning three battle stars. Decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, she was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). In her second career she operated exclusively in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean. In the early 1960s she served as the recovery ship for two Project Mercury space missions, including John Glenn's historic first orbital flight. KRI Dewaruci
KRI ''Dewaruci'' (sometimes spelled ''Dewa Ruci'' or ''Dewarutji'') is a Class A tall ship and the only barquentine owned and operated by the Indonesian Navy. She is used as a sail training vessel for naval cadets and is the largest tall ship in the Indonesian fleet. ''Dewaruci'' also serves as a goodwill ambassador for Indonesia to the rest of the world. Built in Germany by H. C. Stülcken Sohn at Steinwerder, Hamburg. Gorch Fock (1958)
''Gorch Fock'' is a tall ship of the German Navy, launched in 1958 as a replacement for the original launched in 1933 which was taken as war reparations by the Soviet Union after World War II, renamed ''Tovarishch'', and returned to Germany in 2003. Both ships are named in honour of the German writer Johann Kinau who wrote under the pseudonym "Gorch Fock" and died in the battle of Jutland/Skagerrak in 1916. The modern-day ''Gorch Fock'' was launched in 1958 as a delayed sister ship to five ships built in the 1930s, and has since then undertaken 146 cruises (as of October 2006), including one tour around the world in 1988. ''Esmeralda'' is a steel-hulled four-masted barquentine of the Chilean Navy. Construction The ship is the sixth to carry the name ''Esmeralda''. The first was the frigate '' Esmeralda'' captured from the Spanish at Callao, Peru, by Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane of the Chilean Navy, in a bold incursion on the night of 5 November 1820. One Hanover (formerly known as India House, Hanover Bank Building, and New York Cotton Exchange Building) is a commercial building at 1 Hanover Square, on the southwestern edge of the square, in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City.
