Operation Relex
Operation Relex is the name given to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) border protection operation in the country's northern approaches conducted between 2001 and 2006. The operation was instigated following the Tampa affair in September 2001 and the Australian government's resultant Pacific Solution. The focus of Operation Relex was illegal immigration, with assets from all three services of the ADF deployed to prevent the arrival of Suspected Illegal Entry Vessels (SIEVs) in the Australian migration zone. The primary period of activity of Operation Relex was between October and December 2001 when ten SIEVs were intercepted by HMA Ships , , and , assisted by several Fremantle-class patrol boats. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is the Armed forces, military organisation responsible for the defence of Australia and its national interests. It consists of three branches: the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). In late August 2001, the Howard government of Australia refused permission for the Norwegian freighter MV ''Tampa'', carrying 433 rescued refugees (predominantly Hazaras of Afghanistan from a distressed fishing vessel in international waters) and 5 crew, to enter Australian waters. This triggered an Australian political controversy in the lead-up to the 2001 federal election, and a diplomatic dispute between Australia and Norway. When ''Tampa'' entered Australian waters, the Prime Minister ordered the ship be boarded by Australian special forces. This brought censure from the government of Norway, which said the Australian government failed to meet its obligations to distressed mariners under international law at the United Nations. Pacific Solution
The Pacific Solution is the name given to the Australian Government, government of Australia's policy of transporting asylum seekers to detention centres on island nations in the Pacific Ocean, rather than allowing them to land on the Australian mainland. Initially implemented from 2001 to 2007, it had bipartisan support from the Coalition (Australia), Coalition and Australian Labor Party, Labor opposition at the time. Suspected Illegal Entry Vessel
Suspected Irregular Entry Vessel (SIEV) was the operational term used by the Australian Defence Force and Australian Coastwatch for maritime vessels that appeared to be attempting to reach Australia clandestinely. The legal context was of vessels that were entering Australian waters without authorisation. Previously the term 'Suspected ''Illegal'' Entry Vessel' was used. These boats are almost exclusively carrying asylum seekers who have departed from Indonesia on the final leg of a journey which started in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka after paying "people smugglers". During Operation Relex, 12 SIEVs were intercepted. Four were forced back to Indonesia, and three sank. SIEVs were given numerical designations. The Australian migration zone is a legal device created by the Australian Government for the purpose of Visa policy of Australia, Australia's visa policy and Immigration to Australia, immigration policy, as the territory in which Australia's visa policy applies. Fremantle-class Patrol Boat
The ''Fremantle''-class patrol boats were coastal patrol vessels operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) from 1979 to 2007. Designed by British shipbuilder Brooke Marine and constructed in Australia by NQEA, the ''Fremantle'' class were larger, more powerful, and more capable than the preceding , and the two primary patrol boat bases required infrastructure upgrades to support them. Although up to 30 vessels were planned, fifteen were ordered and constructed, with an unexercised option for five more. Their retirement was announced in 2001 and a decommissioning schedule published in 2004. Operation Resolute
Operation Resolute is the involvement of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in Australian government efforts to prevent unauthorised entries to sovereign Australian territory. This has mainly taken the forms of: remote surveillance; air, sea and land patrols by ADF personnel; seizure of " suspected irregular entry vessels", and; locating/assisting people who have entered Australia via such a vessel (prior to the apprehension of such people by relevant civilian authorities). Operation Sovereign Borders (OSB) is a border protection operation led by the Australian Border Force, aimed at stopping maritime arrivals of asylum seekers to Australia.
