Operation Green Merchant
Operation Green Merchant was a nationwide investigation and operation targeting businesses advertising specialized horticultural equipment that was supposedly used to grow cannabis in the 1990s. Background The DEA had decided to investigate the advertising inside the ''High Times'' and ''Sinsemilla Tips'' with the goal of shutting down the blooming indoor marijuana industry using United Parcel Service records to trace deliveries of indoor growing equipment and seeds. The three key targets of Green Merchant were the ''High Times'' magazine, ''Sinsemilla Tips'' magazine and the Holland's Seed Bank owned by Nevil Schoenmakers. ''High Times'' is an American monthly magazine (and cannabis brand) that advocates the legalization of cannabis as well as other counterculture ideas. ''Sinsemilla Tips'' was an American magazine founded in 1980 providing advice for indoor growers of cannabis. The founder was Tom Alexander who based publication of this and another magazine, ''The Growing Edge'', in Corvallis, Oregon. Alexander distributed the first run of 1,000 copies out of his car from the Emerald Triangle to Seattle. During its run the magazine was called "the nation's only trade magazine on the subject" of cannabis cultivation, and sold 10,000 to 20,000 copies a month. ''The New York Times'' said "many growers refer to tas 'the bible'." ''The Wall Street Journal'' noted in 1984 how the magazine's recommendation of bat guano (in a standing column titled "guano notes") affected international trade. Nevil Schoenmakers
Nevil Martin Schoenmakers (2 February 1956 – 30 March 2019) was an Australian-born cannabis breeder known for founding the first cannabis seedbank, which was called "The Seed Bank of Holland", in the early 1980s in the Netherlands. This was also the first seed company to advertise directly to the public in '' High Times'' magazine. Biography Schoenmakers was born in Perth, Western Australia to Dutch parents, Schoenmakers moved to the Netherlands in 1976. There he started growing cannabis for personal use. He soon discovered that the commercially available Thai, Colombian and African strains did not perform well in the Netherlands's northern European climate, nor indoors under artificial lighting. Realizing that the solution to the problem was better genetics, he decided that the best way to obtain good genetics was to start a seed bank, and in 1984 Schoenmakers established "The Seedbank."
