Operation Burlington Trail
Operation Burlington Trail was a security operation conducted during the Vietnam War by the U.S. 198th Infantry Brigade in Quảng Nam Province, South Vietnam from 8 April to 11 November 1968. Background In early April 1968, the 198th Infantry Brigade moved into the Quế Sơn Valley to replace the 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. On arriving the Brigade was tasked with assisting the 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment and the 39th Engineer Battalion in reopening Route 533 between Tam Kỳ and Tiên Phước Camp, 20 kilometers to the southwest. 52nd Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 52nd Infantry Regiment ("Ready Rifles") is an infantry regiment of the United States Army. The charges on the canton of the regiment's coat of arms represent the 11th Infantry from which this regiment was formed in 1917. Its first combat service was in World War I in the Gerardmer Sector in Alsace, a short distance west of Colmar. The bend from the arms of Alsace has been charged with the 6th Division shoulder sleeve insignia to show that the regiment was with that division in France. The coat of arms was originally approved for the 52d Infantry Regiment on 29 June 1921. It was redesignated for the 52d Armored Infantry Regiment on 29 September 1942. 6th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 6th Infantry Regiment ("Regulars") was formed 11 January 1812. Zachary Taylor, later the twelfth President of the United States, was a commander of the unit. The motto, "Regulars, By God!" derives from the Battle of Chippawa, in which British Major General Phineas Riall noticed that the approaching regiment wore militia uniforms. Having defeated militia troops in the Battle of Queenston Heights, Riall assumed another easy victory. Instead, the American regiment pressed the attack. According to the memoirs of regimental commander Winfield Scott, later commanding general of the United States Army, when Riall realized his error, he remarked "Why, these are regulars!." The 46th Infantry Regiment ("The Professionals") is a unit in the United States Army that served in World War II and Vietnam. The 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment currently conducts Infantry One Station Unit Training under the 197th Infantry Brigade. The 2nd Division () was a division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN)—the army of the nation state of South Vietnam that existed from 1955 to 1975. It was part of I Corps that oversaw the northernmost region of South Vietnam. Tiên Phước Camp
Tiên Phước Camp (also known as Tiên Phước Special Forces Camp) is a former U.S. Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base southwest of Tam Kỳ in central Vietnam. History The 5th Special Forces Group Detachment A-102 first established a base here in March 1966 to monitor communist infiltration into the Song Chang Valley.The base was located on QL-585 approximately 20 km southwest of Tam Kỳ and 43 km northwest of Chu Lai. On the night of 22 February 1969 the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) attacked the camp which was defended by the 5th Special Forces Detachment A-102 and CIDG forces. Tam Kỳ
Tam Kỳ () is the capital city of Quảng Nam Province, in the South Central Coast of Vietnam. As of 2019, the city had a population of 122,374. History The town was established in 1906 under the Nguyễn dynasty as an administrative and tax post. During the Republic of Vietnam, the city was the main base of the US military in Quảng Nam Province (what was then Quảng Tín Province) for the war in Vietnam.
