Operation Blue Nose
Operation Blue Nose was a 1947 U.S. Navy, U.S. Naval mission to explore under the Polar ice cap in the Chukchi Sea in the Arctic using submarines. The operation consisted of the submarines USS Boarfish (SS-327), USS BOARFISH (SS-327), USS Caiman (SS-323), USS CAIMAN (SS-323), and USS Cabezon (SS-334), USS CABEZON (SS-334), and submarine tender USS Nereus (AS-17), USS NEREUS (AS-17) took part in CTG 17.3. Operation Blue Nose operated under-ice in the Chukchi Sea were under the command of Allan Rockwell McCann, RADM Allan R. McCann, Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific or COMSUBPAC. USS BOARFISH was the flag ship and was specially equipped and trained in the U.S. Navy's effort to explore and develop submarine under-ice operational capability in the harsh arctic environment. Polar Ice Cap
A polar ice cap or polar cap is a high-latitude region of a planet, dwarf planet, or natural satellite that is covered in ice. There are no requirements with respect to size or composition for a body of ice to be termed a polar ice cap, nor any geological requirement for it to be over land, but only that it must be a body of solid phase matter in the polar region. This causes the term "polar ice cap" to be something of a misnomer, as the term ice cap itself is applied more narrowly to bodies that are over land, and cover less than 50,000 km2: larger bodies are referred to as ice sheets. USS ''Boarfish'' (SS-327), a ''Balao''-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the boarfish, a fish having a projecting hog-like snout. Construction and commissioning ''Boarfish'' (SS-327) was laid down on 12 August 1943; launched on 21 May 1944 by Electric Boat Company, Groton, Connecticut, sponsored by Miss Barbara Walsh, daughter of Senator Arthur Walsh of New Jersey; and commissioned on 23 September 1944, Commander Royce L. Arctic Submarine Laboratory
The Arctic Submarine Laboratory is a research facility of the U.S. Navy's Undersea Warfighting Development Center in San Diego, California. It began as a converted World War II mortar emplacement, ''Battery Whistler'', and was focused on scientific exploration of the Arctic Basin, and particularly providing the capability to operate attack submarines in the Arctic under the ice canopy. Founder In 1941, Dr. Waldo K. Lyon started work at the Navy Radio and Sound Lab, as their first Ph.D. physicist. He was charged with forming and directing initial efforts of the Sound Division. The lab was used during World War II for testing, repairing and modifying submarine equipment and harbor defense systems in the Pacific Ocean. Chukchi Sea
Chukchi Sea ( rus, Чуко́тское мо́ре, r=Chukotskoye more, p=tɕʊˈkotskəjə ˈmorʲɪ), sometimes referred to as the Chuuk Sea, Chukotsk Sea or the Sea of Chukotsk, is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is bounded on the west by the Long Strait, off Wrangel Island, and in the east by Point Barrow, Alaska, beyond which lies the Beaufort Sea. The Bering Strait forms its southernmost limit and connects it to the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The principal port on the Chukchi Sea is Uelen in Russia. Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC) is the principal advisor to the Commander, United States Pacific Fleet ( COMPACFLT) for submarine matters.
