Opera was introduced to Australia by European settlers in the 19th century. The first opera performances were staged in the early 1800s, often by touring companies from Europe. The Opera Awards is an singing competition for professional Australian opera singers. It was established in 1986 with the purpose of assisting and developing professional Australian opera singers. This is achieved through programs of study with selected international educational institutions, engagements with professional opera companies, as well as through introduction, networking and educational opportunities with prominent members of the international operatic community. Opera In The Domain
Opera in the Domain presented by Opera Australia is an open-air concert held in the Phillip Precinct of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney. Every January, thousands of Sydneysiders flock to The Domain for a night of free opera. The event itself has been running since 2000 and since 2005 has been sponsored by Mazda Australia, adopting its new name ''Mazda Opera in the Domain''. Australian classical music has developed from early years in the Australian colonies, until today. Today, each state has an orchestra and there are many major venues where classical music is performed. History Early settlers The earliest western musical influences in Australia can be traced to two distinct sources: in the first settlements, the large body of convicts, soldiers and sailors who brought the traditional folk music of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland; and the first free settlers, some of whom had been exposed to the European classical music tradition in their upbringing. An example of original music by a convict would be an 1861 tune dedicated to settler James Gordon by fiddler constable Alexander Laing. Lyndon Terracini
Lyndon William Terracini (born 1950), is an Australian operatic baritone and from 2009 to October 2022 artistic director of Opera Australia. Early life Terracini was born in 1949, the oldest of four children born to Shirley and Vita Terracini, and grew up in Dee Why, New South Wales. His paternal grandfather, the son of an immigrant from Genoa, converted to Christianity from Judaism and joined the Salvation Army. He grew up in a devout Salvationist family and played multiple instruments in the Salvation Army band, including cornet, flugelhorn, trombone, euphonium and timpani. He later studied music at the University of Sydney. Career Terracini's professional operatic debut was in 1976 as Sid in The Australian Opera's production of ''Albert Herring'' at the Sydney Opera House. Richard Hickox
Richard Sidney Hickox (5 March 1948 – 23 November 2008) was an English conductor of choral, orchestral and operatic music. Early life and education Hickox was born in Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire into a musical family. After attending the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe from 1959 to 1966, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1966 to 1967, then was an organ scholar at Queens' College, Cambridge, from 1967 to 1970. Career In 1967, while his father was Vicar of Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, Hickox founded the Wooburn Festival and eventually became its president. The Festival still takes place and features music, drama and the visual arts. Hickox also founded the Wooburn Singers and continued as conductor until succeeded by Stephen Jackson. Stuart Maunder
Stuart Lionel Maunder (born 1957) is an Australian theatre director, currently appointed as the artistic director of Victorian Opera. He has also directed for Opera Australia, State Opera of South Australia, West Australian Opera, New Zealand Opera and Scottish Opera. Biography Born in Sydney but raised in Boggabri, Maunder studied law, but turned to the stage and started his career as a stage manager in 1978 at The Australian Opera before becoming a resident director in 1981. Simone Margaret Young AM (born 2 March 1961) is an Australian conductor and academic teacher. She is currently chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Biography and career Young was born in Sydney, of Irish ancestry on her father's side and Croatian ancestry on her mother's. Young was educated at the Monte Sant'Angelo Mercy College in North Sydney. She studied composition, piano and conducting at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Beginning in 1983, Young worked at Opera Australia as a répétiteur under various conductors, including Charles Mackerras, Richard Bonynge, Carlo Felice Cillario and Stuart Challender. Moffatt Oxenbould
Moffatt Benjamin Oxenbould (born 18 November 1943) is a retired Australian opera director. The Sydney-born Oxenbould was artistic director of Opera Australia from 1984 until his retirement in 1999. In 1962 he joined the company – known as Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera Company – after graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in theatre production. After his retirement he directed with Opera Australia and Houston Grand Opera and was a presenter with the classical music radio station ABC Classic FM. Oxenbould was made a Member of the Order of Australia in January 1985 for his services to opera. In 2005 he released his memoirs ''Timing is Everything'', describing his 37 years in opera in Australia. A coloratura soprano () is a type of operatic soprano voice that specializes in music that is distinguished by agile runs, leaps and trills. The term ''coloratura'' refers to the elaborate ornamentation of a melody, which is a typical component of the music written for this voice.
