OpenMandriva Lx
OpenMandriva Lx is a general-purpose Linux distribution maintained by the OpenMandriva Association for x86 (32/64-bit) and ARM (architecture), ARM computers. It is a community-supported continuation of Mandriva Linux, which was active from 1998 (as Mandrake) until 2011. OpenMandriva is offered in a stable release edition, and (since 2023) a rolling release edition named Rome. It uses the RPM Package Manager and uses KDE Plasma 5, KDE Plasma as its default desktop environment. OpenMandriva Lx's development environment is an ABF (Automated Build Farm) which can manage the source code and compile it to binaries. ABF also creates the package repository and ISO images. Mandriva Linux
Mandriva Linux, a fusion of the French distribution Mandrake Linux and the Brazilian distribution Conectiva Linux, is a discontinued Linux distribution developed by Mandriva S.A. Each release lifetime was 18 months for base updates (Linux, system software, etc.) and 12 months for desktop updates ( window managers, desktop environments, web browsers, etc.). Server products received full updates for at least five years after their release. The last release of Mandriva Linux was in August 2011. Most developers who were laid off went to Mageia. PCLinuxOS
PCLinuxOS, often shortened to PCLOS, is a rolling release Linux distribution for x86-64 computers, with KDE Plasma, MATE, and XFCE as its default user interfaces. It is a primarily FOSS operating system for personal computers aimed at ease of use. History The precursor to PCLinuxOS was a set of RPM packages created to improve successive versions of Mandrake Linux (later Mandriva Linux). These packages were created by Bill Reynolds, a packager better known as "Texstar". From 2000 to 2003, Texstar maintained his repository of RPM packages in parallel with the PCLinuxOnline site. In an interview, Texstar said he started PCLinuxOS "to provide an outlet for iscrazy desire to package source code without having to deal with egos, arrogance, and politics." Granular Linux
Granular, or Granular Linux, was a Linux distribution targeted at the common desktop users. Granular was based on PCLinuxOS and came as an installable live CD. The CD version of Granular featured two desktop environments – KDE and a development version of Enlightenment. Where KDE is a full-featured desktop environment, Enlightenment is a lightweight desktop shell which is markedly faster than KDE. History Granular had its roots in India. ALT Linux
ALT Linux is a set of Russian operating systems based on RPM Package Manager (RPM) and built on a Linux kernel and Sisyphus package repository. ALT Linux has been developed collectively by ALT Linux Team developers community and ALT Linux Ltd. History ALT Linux Team arose from the merger of IPLabs Linux Team and the Linux community of the Institute of Logic, Cognitive Science and Development of Personality. The latter cooperated with Mandrake Linux and SUSE Linux teams to improve localization (specifically Cyrillic script), producing a Linux-Mandrake Russian Edition (RE). Mandrake and Mandrake RE became different distributions and thus the decision was made to create a separate project. DemoLinux
DemoLinux was one of the first Live CD Linux distributions. It was created by Roberto Di Cosmo, Vincent Balat and Jean-Vincent Loddo, in 1998. The DemoLinux CD was created to make it possible to use Linux without having to install it on the hard disk. It was the first Linux Live CD that made it possible to use the system in graphic mode and without any stage of configuration. There are many other Live CD Linux distributions today. DemoLinux can be considered to be the ancestor of Knoppix. DemoLinux offered the user hundreds of applications (among them KDE and StarOffice), owing to using to a compressed file system. The CD could be used without any modification to the hard disk; however, the user could use space on the hard disk to store their personal data and install additional applications using the distribution's standard tools. Red Hat Linux
Red Hat Linux was a widely used commercial open-source Linux distribution created by Red Hat until its discontinuation in 2004. Early releases of Red Hat Linux were called Red Hat Commercial Linux. Red Hat published the first non-beta release in May 1995. It included the Red Hat Package Manager as its packaging format, and over time RPM has served as the starting point for several other distributions, such as Mandriva Linux and Yellow Dog Linux. In 2003, Red Hat discontinued the Red Hat Linux line in favor of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for enterprise environments.
