Onslow College
Onslow College is a state co-educational secondary school located in Johnsonville, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. In 2022 it had 1405 students. The current principal is Sheena Millar. History Onslow College opened in 1956 to serve Wellington's rapidly growing northern suburbs. It was named after the 4th Earl of Onslow, governor of New Zealand from 1889 to 1892. The school roll grew from 201 third form pupils in 1956 to 1180 pupils in 1969. Former principal Stuart Martin described the "Onslow Way" as "socially liberal but educationally conservative, decile 10 but physically run down". In 1969, Peggy-Anne Wendelken became New Zealand's first woman chair of a school board of governors; at this time Onslow's board had student representation, twenty years before this became a legal requirement. Johnsonville, Wellington
Johnsonville is a large suburb in northern Wellington, New Zealand. It is seven kilometres north of the city centre, at the top of the Ngauranga Gorge, on the main route to Porirua (New Zealand State Highway 1, State Highway 1). It is commonly known by locals as "J'ville". Johnsonville was settled from the 1840s, became a town by 1896 and grew rapidly during the twentieth century. Johnsonville became an independent town district in 1908 and amalgamated with Wellington City in 1953. History Johnson's clearing Johnsonville was originally the site of a Māori track from Wellington to Porirua (the Old Porirua Road), and had no indigenous inhabitants prior to European settlement. Vegetation was dense native forest, dominated by tōtara, mixed podocarp trees (notably tōtara and rimu), rātā and hīnau. Kate Camp (born 1972) is a New Zealand poet and author who currently resides in Wellington. Early life and education Camp was born in 1972 in Wellington, New Zealand. She attended Onslow College. She has a BA in English from the Victoria University of Wellington. Career Poems by Camp have appeared in the ''Best New Zealand Poems'' series in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010, 2012, and 2013. Tāmati Coffey
Tāmati Gerald Coffey (born 19 September 1979) is a New Zealand broadcaster, politician, and former Member of Parliament. As a broadcaster, Coffey presented television programmes such as ''What Now'', ''Breakfast'', and ''New Zealand's Got Talent.'' He was a Member of Parliament for the New Zealand Labour Party for six years from 2017 to 2023. Georgina Beyer
Georgina Beyer (November 1957 – 6 March 2023) was a New Zealand Labour Party politician who represented Wairarapa in the Parliament of New Zealand from 1999 to 2005, after serving as mayor of Carterton from 1995 to 1999. Beyer was the world's first openly transgender mayor, and the world's first openly transgender member of parliament. Catherine Delahunty
Catherine Delahunty (born 1953) is a New Zealand politician and environmentalist. From until 2017 she was a member of parliament in the House of Representatives representing the Green Party. Rocky Wood
Rocky Wood (19 October 1959 – 1 December 2014) was a New Zealand-born Australian writer and researcher best known for his books about horror author Stephen King. He was the first author from outside North America or Europe to hold the position of president of the Horror Writers Association. Wood was born in Wellington, New Zealand and lived in Melbourne, Australia with his family. He had been a freelance writer for over 35 years. His writing career began at university, where he wrote a national newspaper column in New Zealand on extra-terrestrial life and UFO-related phenomena and published other articles about the phenomenon worldwide, in the course of which research he met such figures as Erich von Däniken and J. Ian Wishart (born 1964) is a New Zealand journalist, author and publisher, and the editor of ''Investigate (New Zealand), Investigate'' magazine. Ben Schrader
Ben Schrader (19 July 1964 – 19 April 2024) was a New Zealand historian specialising in urban history. His areas of interest included the history of state housing in New Zealand and urban development in New Zealand in the 19th and 20th centuries. Education and personal life Schrader was born in Christchurch in 1964, and grew up in Wellington where he attended Onslow College. He obtained a bachelor's degree in arts from Victoria University of Wellington in 1986 followed by a master's degree in 1993. Before obtaining his master's degree, Schrader married Lis Cowley; they had two sons together. Raquel Abolins-Reid (born in 1999), known professionally as RIIKI REID (formerly Riiki), is a New Zealand singer-songwriter, producer and dance choreographer. Several of Reid's songs have charted highly in the NZ Hot Singles Charts, including ''Good times'' which reached number 1.
