''Only Sometimes'' is the first EP from the San Francisco-based dream pop group Astral, released in 2002. The EP was self-produced and the first recording that the band released. The EP charted on some college radio stations. It is considered indicative of the direction that the group would take with their first album, Orchids Orchids are plants that belong to the family Orchidaceae (), a diverse and widespread group of flowering plants with blooms that are often colourful and fragrant. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering ..., which was released a year later. The song "Catalyst" was improvised. The song "Turn Me Around" would later appear on ''Orchids''. Astral (band)
Astral is a shoegaze group based in San Francisco, California, United States. Astral was formed by singer-guitarist Dave Han and drummer Shawn in 1999; bassist Amy Rosenoff joined them in 2001. Their vocals are frequently compared to those of The Cure; other influences include My Bloody Valentine (band), My Bloody Valentine and Joy Division. Their music is of an ethereal, melodic nature; this ambient sound is created largely by heavy use of distortion and audio feedback, feedback effects in Han's guitar. Astral are also notable for incorporating improvisation into their live performances. In 2002, Astral released a self-produced EP, "Only Sometimes". In 2003, Astral released an LP, entitled "Orchids". Two songs from that album, "Raining Down" and the title-track instrumental, were preloaded in the Rio Carbon MP3 Players. Dream Pop
Dream pop (also typeset as dreampop) is a subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions, and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the two genre terms have at times been used interchangeably. The genre came into prominence in the 1980s through the work of groups such as Cocteau Twins and A.R. Kane. Subsequently, acts such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Galaxie 500, Julee Cruise, Lush, and Mazzy Star released significant albums in the style. It saw renewed popularity among millennial listeners following the late-'00s success of Beach House. ''Orchids'' is the debut album of dream pop band Astral. It contained ten songs and was released in 2003. The title track, Orchids, is a highly melodic instrumental slightly reminiscent of space rock. The record was mixed at Stout Recording Studio in Oakland, California and was engineered by Randy Burk, who in the past had worked with Swingin' Utters The album charted #119 on the CMJ 200. Two songs, Orchids and Raining Down, were preloaded on the Rio Carbon The Rio Carbon is a line of digital audio players that was produced by the now defunct Rio from 2004 to 2005.
