Onehunga Branch, Auckland
The Onehunga Branch railway line is a section of the Onehunga Line in Auckland, New Zealand. It was constructed by the Auckland Provincial Government and opened from Penrose to Onehunga on 24 December 1873, and extended to Onehunga Wharf on 28 November 1878. It is in length and is single-track only. After being closed to passenger traffic on 19 January 1973 and mothballed in 2007, the line was reopened on 18 September 2010 with regular passenger services beginning on 19 September 2010. History Construction and original services The Onehunga Branch was part of one of the first government-funded railways in New Zealand. The Auckland and Drury Railway Act 1863 was passed by Parliament "to enable the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland to construct a Railway between the Towns of Auckland and Drury with a Branch to Onehunga in the said Province." ADL/ADC Class Diesel Multiple Unit
The ADL class is a class of diesel multiple units that were last operated by Auckland One Rail on the commuter rail, suburban rail network in Auckland, New Zealand. Originally built in the early 1980s by UGL Rail, A Goninan & Co for Westrail of Western Australia, they were sold in 1993 by Westrail's successor, Metropolitan Transport Trust, Transperth, to Tranz Rail, New Zealand Rail. The units are currently owned by Auckland Transport, and were withdrawn from service in August 2022 and transported to Glenbrook Vintage Railway and Pukeoware depot for storage. History Between 1981 and 1985, ten two-carriage stainless steel sets were manufactured for the Metropolitan Transport Trust and Westrail by UGL Rail, A Goninan & Co, Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle.
