''Once Dead'' is the second studio album by Christian metal, Christian death metal, death and thrash metal musical group, band Vengeance Rising, released in 1990 on Intense Records and re-released in November 2010 on Intense Millennium Records. According to Allmusic, both the debut and ''Once Dead'' "were huge successes in the world of Christian music, making Vengeance Rising one of the few bands in the genre to cross over into the secular music scene". In 2010 ''HM Magazine'' ranked ''Once Dead'' #45 on Top 100 Christian metal albums of all-time list. Musically, the album showed an influence of speed metal, with thrash arrangements on some songs, like the cover of Deep Purples' Space Truckin', and "Out Of The Will", which reminded one reviewer of One Bad Pig. Vengeance Rising
Vengeance Rising was an American Christian thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. Fronted by vocalist Roger Martinez, they originally formed as Vengeance in 1987, but changed their name in 1989 to avoid conflict with another band from the Netherlands. Band members Larry Farkas, Doug Thieme, Roger Dale Martin, and Glen Mancaruso left following ''Once Dead'' and formed the band Die Happy. Roger Martinez stayed on to record two more studio albums, but aside from him, Vengeance Rising's lineup changed for each subsequent album. While the group was a ground breaking Christian metal band, today Vengeance Rising is known for vocalist Martinez's turning from Christianity to Satanism to atheism. Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. Roger Dale Martin, or more commonly known as Roger Dale, is a heavy metal musician who has performed with several acts, including Vengeance Rising and Once Dead. History Roger Dale Martin was born on June 19, in Oklahoma. At the age of 12 he was playing in bands, as he did throughout and even after his High School years. He worked for a construction company, which traveled to several different states, where he would form new bands. One job took him to California, where he met David Enos and joined the band Emerald. He recorded on the band's debut EP, ''Armed for Battle'', and following its completion, moved on from the band. After finishing his stint with Emerald, he played a few shows with Holy Right before leaving that band. Martin then went on to play for Sanctuary Church's band – Sanctuary Celebration Band – for a brief time in 1986. Afterward, Martin was introduced to Doug Thieme, who started Sacrifice with Martin. Larry Farkas (born May 2, 1966) is an American guitarist who primarily performs thrash metal. He was a member of Christian bands Vengeance Rising, Deliverance, Holy Soldier, and Once Dead, many of which he started. History Farkas presumably started his musical career in the Christian rock band Holy Soldier. He was only briefly in the band before bandmate Chris Hyde asked him to join Deliverance, a band Hyde was in. Farkas joined Deliverance and was in the band until 1987. After his departure from Deliverance, Farkas joined the band Vengeance Rising, then known as Vengeance. In 1988, the band released their debut album titled ''Human Sacrifice''. The band's name, Vengeance, got the band into legal trouble, so they changed it to Vengeance Rising. In 1990, Vengeance released '' Once Dead''. Martin Van Drunen
Martin van Drunen (born 1966) is a Dutch death metal vocalist who started out in the band Pestilence. In this band, he also performed the bass duties live. He recorded two albums with them, ''Malleus Maleficarum'' and ''Consuming Impulse''. After his departure from Pestilence, van Drunen joined Asphyx as the singer and bass player in 1990 (in 1992, he would abandon his position as bass player to focus solely on vocals) and recorded six studio albums in total. He performed the vocals on Comecon's second album '' Converging Conspiracies'' in 1993 and then formed his own band called Submission. In 1995, he was asked to replace Karl Willetts in the UK death metal band Bolt Thrower. He did two tours with them, but never recorded an album. Sodom (band)
Sodom is a German thrash metal band from Gelsenkirchen, formed in 1982. They have gone through many lineup changes, with bassist/vocalist Tom Angelripper the only constant member. The band is currently composed of Angelripper, guitarists Frank Blackfire, Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik (who was a member of Sodom from 1987 to 1989 and rejoined in 2018) and Yorck Segatz, and drummer Toni Merkel. Sodom has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal, along with Kreator, Destruction (band), Destruction and Tankard (band), Tankard. Slayer
Slayer is an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California, formed in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King, drummer Dave Lombardo and bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. Slayer's fast and aggressive musical style made them one of the "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. ''Cross Rhythms'' was the eponymously titled music magazine, founded by Tony Cummings produced by the Christian media organisation of the same name. ''Cross Rhythms'' centered almost exclusively on contemporary Christian music, with only the occasional review of more mainstream music. Each issue included interviews with musicians and bands, reviews of various albums and compilations, and features on music festivals or productions. Each issue also included a CD, narrated by Mike Rimmer, containing a selection of the songs featured in the magazine. One Bad Pig is an American Christian punk and metal crossover band from Austin, Texas, which formed in 1985. The ''Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music'' describes them as "quite possibly the most popular hard-punk act ever to arise within the Christian music scene." They were known for their mischief and irreverence on stage, as reflected even in their reunion at Cornerstone in 2000. Background The group evolved out of a street ministry led by Carey Womack, who was studying to become a Baptist minister at the time. Several other members also had a background in ministry: Brian Wheeler was an Assembly of God evangelist, and Paul Q-Pek had sung with The Continental Singers. ''CCM Magazine'' is an online magazine focusing on contemporary Christian music and media, published by Logan and Amanda Sekulow. History ''CCM'' was first published in July 1978, as a printed magazine. It has been owned by Salem since 1999. On January 16, 2008, Salem announced that the April 2008 issue would be the final printed issue of the magazine, which would continue in an online-only format. When the magazine was first published, it was called ''Contemporary Christian Music'' and covered that music genre. Space Truckin'
"Space Truckin'" is a song by English hard rock band Deep Purple. It is the seventh and final track on the '' Machine Head'' album and its lyrics talk of space travel. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore claims in '' Classic Albums: Deep Purple – The Making of Machine Head'' that the song composition started with the half-step riffs in the refrain, which were inspired by the theme music for the ''Batman'' TV programme composed by Neal Hefti. Blackmore asked singer Ian Gillan if he could write any lyrics over the riff, and the rest of the song evolved from there.
