Oluf Dietrichson
Oluf Christian Dietrichson (3 May 1856 – 20 February 1942) was a Norwegian explorer and military officer. He was a member of the Greenland expedition of 1888 led by Fridtjof Nansen, the first documented crossing of Greenland. Oluf Dietrichson was born in Skogn Municipality (now part of Levanger Municipality) in Nordre Trondheim county, Norway. His father, Peter Wilhelm Kreidahl Dietrichson, was employed as the senior doctor at the Nord-Trøndelag Hospital. He received a military education and was commanding officer in Kristiansand from 1918 to 1924. Dietrichson continued his military career and advanced to Major General. In 1888, Fridtjof Nansen assembling a team for the purpose of crossing the Greenlandic ice-sheet. Dietrichson participated as a metrological surveyor, surveyor and map marker. Otto Neumann Knoph Sverdrup (31 October 1854 – 26 November 1930) was a Norwegian sailor and Arctic explorer. Early and personal life He was born in Bindal Municipality as a son of farmer Ulrik Frederik Suhm Sverdrup (1833–1914) and his wife Petra Neumann Knoph (1831–1885). He was a great-grandnephew of Georg Sverdrup and Jacob Liv Borch Sverdrup, first cousin twice removed of Harald Ulrik and Johan Sverdrup, second cousin once removed of Jakob, Georg and Edvard Sverdrup, third cousin of Georg Johan, Jakob, Mimi, Leif and Harald Ulrik Sverdrup. He was a brother-in-law of Johan Vaaler, and Otto himself married his own first cousin, Gretha Andrea Engelschiøn (1866–1937), in October 1891 in Kristiania. Kristian Kristiansen (16 February 1865 - 30 June 1943) was a Norwegian explorer who participated in the Greenland expedition of 1888 arranged by Fridtjof Nansen. Ole Nielsen Ravna
Ole Nilsen Ravna (31 October 1841 - 11 August 1906) was a Northern Saami adventurer, explorer and reindeer herder. He skied with Fridtjof Nansen across Greenland in 1888–89. Biography Ole Nilsen Ravna was born on October 31, 1841, in Karasjok Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. Reindeer herding was typical work for Saami, Ole Ravna had his own herd of reindeers. When Ravna was forty-six years old, he became a member of the Greenland expedition (1888-1889). The head of expedition, Fridtjof Nansen, was displeased with him, because Ravna had a family and motion sickness. Samuel Johannesen Balto (May 5, 1861 – 1921) was a Northern Saami explorer and adventurer. Balto skied with Fridtjof Nansen across Greenland in 1888–89. Biography Samuel Johannesen Balto was born in Karasjok Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. He had worked as a lumberjack, as well as in reindeer herding and fishing. In 1888, Balto was recruited by Fridtjof Nansen for Nansen's Trans-Greenland Expedition. Balto participated in the first recorded crossing of the interior of Greenland, together with Nansen and four other expedition members. Balto wrote his own book after the expedition: ''Med Nansen over Grønlandsisen i 1888 – Min reise fra Sameland til Grønland''. In 1898, Balto moved to Alaska and signed a two-year contract as a reindeer herder. Fridtjof Nansen
Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (; 10 October 1861 – 13 May 1930) was a Norwegian polymath and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He gained prominence at various points in his life as an explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and co-founded the Fatherland League (Norway), Fatherland League. He led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, traversing the island on cross-country skis.
