Olshanske ( uk, Ольшанське, russian: Ольшанское) is an urban-type settlement in Mykolaiv Raion, Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Olshanske settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: The settlement is located on the right bank of the Southern Bug, about from the river. History In 1961, a construction of a big cement plant started. The settlement serving the plant was known as the Hryhorievka Cement Plant and belonged to Varvarivka Raion of Mykolaiv Oblast. In 1963, Varvarivka Raion was abolished and Mykolaiv Raion was established. In 1968, Hryhorievka Cement Plant was renamed Olshanske, to commemorate Konstantin Olshansky, a Hero of the Soviet Union, and it was granted urban-type settlement status. Mykolaiv Raion ( uk, Миколаївський район) is located in Mykolaiv Oblast of Ukraine. Its administrative center is the city of Mykolaiv. Population: History In the 19th century, the area belonged to Kherson Governorate. In December 1920, it was renamed Nikolayev Governorate, and in 1921 it was merged into Odessa Governorate. In 1923, governorates were abolished in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1923, Mykolaiv Raion of Mykolaiv Okruha, with the administrative center in Mykolaiv, was established. Konstantin Fyodorovich Olshansky ( uk, Костянтин Федорович Ольшанський; 21 May 1915 – 27 March 1944) was a Senior Lieutenant and Soviet marine of the Black Sea Fleet, born in Prykolotne, Ukraine. He died during an assault on the port of Mykolaiv, Ukraine, formerly Nikolaev, occupied in World War II by German forces, and was posthumously awarded Hero of the Soviet Union. Mykolaiv ( uk, Миколаїв, ) is a city and municipality in Southern Ukraine, the administrative center of the Mykolaiv Oblast. The title Hero of the Soviet Union (russian: Герой Советского Союза, translit=Geroy Sovietskogo Soyuza) was the highest distinction in the Soviet Union, awarded together with the Order of Lenin personally or collectively for heroic feats in service to the Soviet state and society.
