Olive Clarke
Olive Clarke ( Teasdale, 19 May 1922 – 18 December 2023) was an English farmer and public figure in Cumbria. Early life and education Clarke was born Olive Teasdale, on 19 May 1922, an only child in a farming family. Her parents were George Teasdale and his wife Sarah, Fawcett. She gained a scholarship to Kendal High School for Girls, and there was encouraged by the headmistress, a Dr Frood, to take up public speaking. Clarke said that Dr Frood "believed women should assert themselves and achieve a place in society - and they would need to be articulate, so she included public speaking in the school curriculum". She left school aged 16. Public life Young Farmers' Club Clarke joined the Hutton, Cumbria, Hutton National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs, Young Farmers' Club (YFC) in 1938 when she left school. Worshipful Company Of Farmers
The Worshipful Company of Farmers is one of the Livery Company, Livery Companies of the City of London. The company became a Livery Company in 1952, with the support of HM King George VI, and was granted a royal charter three years later by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1955. The Farmers' Company supports farming students and promotes education in agriculture. HRH Princess Anne, Princess Royal was master of the company for 2001–02. St Patrick's Church, Preston Patrick
St Patrick's Church is the parish church of Preston Patrick, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican church, one of eight parish churches served by the Kirkby Lonsdale Team Ministry. It is in the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. History Until the 19th century, this locality was within the large rural parish of Heversham. However, there was a chapel on the site. In 1850 the Lancaster architects Edmund Sharpe and E. G. Paley reported that the chapel appeared, from its architectural design, to have been built during the reign of Henry VII (1457–1509). The architects designed a new church. Building started in 1852 and the new church opened on 28 November of that year. It cost about £1,400 (), and had seating for 1,386 people. Freeman Of The City Of London
The Freedom of the City of London started around 1237 as the status of a 'free man' or 'citizen', protected by the charter of the City of London and not under the jurisdiction of a feudal lord. In the Middle Ages, this developed into a freedom or right to trade, becoming closely linked to the medieval guilds, the livery companies. In 1835, eligibility for the freedom of the City was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to the City. The freedom that citizens enjoy has long associations with privileges in the governance of the City. Whilst no longer carrying many substantive rights and largely existing as a tradition, the freedom is a pre-requisite for standing for election to the Common Council and Court of Aldermen of the City of London. A livery company is a type of guild or professional association that originated in medieval times in London, England. Livery companies comprise London's ancient and modern trade associations and guilds, almost all of which are styled the "Worshipful Company of" their craft, trade or profession. There are 113 livery companies as at March 2025. They play a significant part in the life of the City of London, not least by providing charitable-giving and networking opportunities. Liverymen retain voting rights for the senior civic offices, such as the Lord Mayor, Sheriffs and Common Council of the City Corporation, London's ancient municipal authority with extensive local government powers. The Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE) promotes the scientific development of English agriculture. It was established in 1838 with the motto "Practice with Science" and was known as the English Agricultural Society until it received its Royal Charter and present name from Victoria of the United Kingdom, Queen Victoria in 1840.
