Oldham Athletic Association Football Club is a professional association football club in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. As of the 2025–26 season, the team competes in EFL League Two, the fourth level of the English football league system. The history of Oldham Athletic began with the founding of Pine Villa F.C. in 1895, the team played in the Manchester and Lancashire leagues. When the local team Oldham County folded in 1899, Pine Villa moved into Boundary Park and changed their name to Oldham Athletic A.F.C.. They won the Lancashire Combination league title in 1906–07 and were elected into the Football League. They won promotion out of the Second Division in 1909–10 and went on to finish second in the First Division in 1914–15, before being relegated in 1923. Frank Rothwell (businessman)
Frank Rothwell OBE is an English businessman and the owner of football team Oldham Athletic A.F.C., Oldham Athletic. Rothwell bought the club in July 2022. In February 2021, at age 70, he became the oldest person to complete the Atlantic Rowing Race, Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a solo row across the Atlantic ocean. At the age of 73, he undertook a second journey, finishing that in February 2024. He raised £1.1 million on his first trip and £253,000 on his second trip, also setting a new world record as the oldest person to row solo across any ocean. In 2025, he received an Order of the British Empire, OBE for his charitable services to dementia research. Football League Third Division North
The Third Division North of the Football League was a tier in the English football league system from 1921 to 1958. It ran in parallel with the Third Division South with clubs elected to the League or relegated from a higher division allocated to one or the other according to geographical position. Some clubs in the English Midlands shuttled between the Third Division North and the Third Division South according to the composition of the two leagues in any one season. The Third Division South had been created in 1921 from the Third Division formed the previous year made up of 22 teams drawn mostly from the Southern League. Oldham is a town in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the Pennines on elevated ground between the rivers Irk and Medlock, southeast of Rochdale, and northeast of Manchester. The 1990 Football League Cup Final took place at Wembley Stadium on 29 April 1990. It was the 30th League Cup Final, and was contested between Nottingham Forest and Oldham Athletic.
