Old Kentucky Turnpike Historic District is a national historic district located at Cedar Bluff, Tazewell County, Virginia. The district encompasses 35 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, and 3 contributing structures along Indian Creek Road and Indian Creek. They date from the late-19th to mid-20th centuries. Notable resources include the concrete bridge, steel railroad trestle, Cecil-Watkins House, Ratliff House, Cedar Bluff Presbyterian Church (c. 1930), the boyhood home of Governor George C. Peery (1873–1952), Thomas Cubine House (c. 1887), Gillespie House (c. 1892), the Old Cedar Bluff High School, Cedar Bluff High School (1906), and the Old Cedar Bluff Town Hall. Cedar Bluff is a town in Tazewell County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,139 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bluefield, WV-VA micropolitan area, which has a population of 107,578. History Cedar Bluff is a 19th-century mill town located on the banks of the Clinch River in Tazewell County, Virginia. Centered around the Old Kentucky Turnpike, a street looking much as it did when the Virginia Legislature chartered the thoroughfare in 1848, the nationally listed historic district extends from the restored old grist mill to the 1873 birthplace of Virginia Governor George C. Peery. Cedar Bluff is the home of the Clinch Valley Blanket Mill which housed the Goodwin weavers, in operation from 1890 through World War II. The Virginia Civil War Trails project includes a Cedar Bluff battle site, with two markers detailing the event. Tazewell County () is a county located in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,429. Its county seat is Tazewell. Tazewell County is part of the Bluefield, WV-VA Micropolitan Statistical Area. Its economy was dependent on coal and iron of the Pocahontas Fields from the late 19th into the 20th century. History Tazewell County was long a hunting ground for various historic Native American tribes and their ancestral indigenous cultures. Although rare in the eastern United States, there are petroglyphs near the summit of Paintlick Mountain. Among the tribes that occupied this area in historic times were the Lenape (Delaware), and the Iroquoian-speaking Cherokee and members of the Iroquois Confederacy. In the spring of 1771, Thomas and John Witten established the first permanent settlement in Tazewell County at Crab Orchard. Clinch Valley Roller Mills is a historic grist mill complex located along the Clinch River at Cedar Bluff, Tazewell County, Virginia. The main building was built about 1856, and consists of a 3 1/2-story, timber frame cinder block with later 19th and early-20th century additions. There are additions for grain storage; a saw mill, now enclosed and housing the mill office; the mill dam site with its associated culvert, weirs, flume and turbines; and the 1 1/2-story shop building.
