Okavango (Botswana Constituency)
Okavango was a constituency in the North-West District. Following the completion of the 2022 Delimitation of Parliamentary constituencies, the existing seat was abolished and replaced by two new constituencies, Okavango East and Okavango West, to be first contested in the upcoming 2024 general election. Constituency profile The Okavango constituency was located in the north of North-West District and existed with the majority of its boundaries intact from the first inaugural elections in 1965 until 2024, making it one of the longest-running constituencies in Botswana's electoral history. Throughout its existence, Okavango has generally remained an opposition stronghold and the region that has voted the least for the BDP since Botswana's independence (the party only won the constituency in 1965, 1979 and 2004). 2014 Botswana General Election
General and local elections were held in Botswana on 24 October 2014. The result was an eleventh straight victory for the Botswana Democratic Party, which won 37 of the 57 elected seats. Incumbent president Ian Khama was sworn in for a second term on 28 October. The period leading up to the elections was characterized by an unprecedented economic downturn in the country, a direct result of the Great Recession. Additionally, there was a surge in social conflict, including a lengthy public service strike in mid-2011, which was orchestrated by the Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSU). Ian Khama received significant criticism for his handling of these issues, and internal conflicts within the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) deepened. 2019 Botswana General Election

Motsamai Mpho
Motsamai Keyecwe Mpho (February 3, 1921 – November 28, 2012) was a Motswana activist and politician. He founded Botswana's first political party in 1960, the Botswana People's Party, then known as the Bechualand People's Party, alongside Klaas Motshidisi, Kgalemang Motsete, and Philip Matante. However, due to conflict within the party, Mpho left and founded the Botswana Independence Party in 1964. He also served as a member of the National Assembly. Some historians believe that Mpho was the first to introduce the term 'Botswana' into formal political vocabulary, replacing the colonialist name of Bechuanaland. He married his wife, Onalepelo Hannah Macheng, on 7 July 1960, whilst incarcerated in Pretoria Prison for treason in South Africa. Mpho was among the first to sing the Botswana national anthem after returning to Botswana following a Pan-African conference in Ghana in 1972.
