Okakarara
Okakarara is a town in Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia, located southeast of Waterberg National Park. It has an estimated population of 7,000 and is currently growing by 1,500 inhabitants annually. Okakarara consists of the residential areas of ''Pamue'', the former whites-only area, and ''Okakarara Proper'', the former black residential area. It is the district capital of the Okakarara electoral constituency that includes surrounding settlements. History The first house was built by Salathiel Kambamba Kambazembi and Reinard Tjerije who arrived in the area in 1923. The settlement grew over time and was proclaimed a town in 1992. Okakarara became the centre of the Herero Tribal Authority in the early 1970s. Otjozondjupa is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its capital is Otjiwarongo. The region further contains the municipalities of Okahandja and Grootfontein and the towns Okakarara and Otavi. , Otjozondjupa had 97,945 registered voters. Geography A landmark within this region is the Waterberg Plateau Park. Twenty four kilometres west of Grootfontein lies the huge Hoba meteorite. Okakarara Constituency
Okakarara Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia. It had 21,336 inhabitants in 2004 and 16,221 registered voters . The constituency consists of the town of Okakarara and the surrounding rural area. Politics Okakarara is one of the few Namibian constituencies that are not dominated by the SWAPO Party. In the 2004 regional election, Vetaruhe Kandorozu of the National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO) received 3,647 of the 6,472 votes cast and became councillor. In the 2015 regional election councillor Kandorozu (NUDO) was reelected with 3,628 votes, followed by Jonathan Tjakuva (SWAPO) with 2,126 votes and Abdal Mutjavikua of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA) with 1,702 votes. Constituencies Of Namibia
Each of the 14 regions of Namibia is further subdivided into Electoral district, electoral constituencies. The size of the constituencies varies with the size and population of each region. There are currently 121 constituencies in Namibia. The most populous constituency according to the 2011 census was Rundu Urban in the Kavango East region with 63,431 people; the least populous was Okatyali Constituency, Okatyali in the Oshana Region with 3,187 people. Local councillors are directly elected through secret ballots (regional elections) by the inhabitants of their constituencies. Otjiwarongo (Herero language, Herero for "beautiful place") is a city of 49,000 inhabitants in the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia. It is the district capital of the Otjiwarongo Constituency, Otjiwarongo electoral constituency and also the capital of Otjozondjupa. Otjiwarongo is situated in central-north Namibia on the TransNamib railway. It is the biggest business centre for Otjozondjupa Region. 2020 Namibian Local And Regional Elections
Local and regional elections were held in Namibia on 25 November 2020 to elect new local and regional councils. The previous round of elections was 2015 Namibian local and regional elections, held in 2015 and won by the ruling SWAPO party. Electoral system Elections for regional councils are held using the first-past-the-post electoral system. Voters in each constituency elect one councillor to represent them on their regional council. Local authority councillors are elected by a system of proportional representation. Local authority candidate lists have affirmative action requirements for women. National Unity Democratic Organisation
The National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO) is a political party in Namibia. It has been represented in the National Assembly of Namibia and in the National Council of Namibia since it split from the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (now PDM) prior to the 2004 general and local elections. The party's president is Esther Muinjangue. History NUDO was founded by Mburumba Kerina, Clemens Kapuuo, and Hosea Kutako in September 1965 at the suggestion of the Herero Chiefs' Council. It was thus, at that time, an organisation that had mainly Herero followers. At the 1975-1977 Turnhalle Constitutional Conference, several ethnically based parties agreed to join the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance to form one joint opposition to SWAPO which at that time had turned the struggle for Namibian independence into a guerrilla war. Herero People
The Herero () are a Bantu people, Bantu ethnic group inhabiting parts of Southern Africa. 178,987 Namibians identified as Ovaherero in the 2023 census. They speak Otjiherero, a Bantu language. Though the Herero primarily reside in Namibia, there are also significant populations in Botswana and Angola, and a small number in South Africa. Hereroland
Hereroland was a Bantustan and later a non-geographic ethnic-based second-tier authority, the Representative Authority of the Hereros, in South West Africa (present day Namibia), intended by the apartheid-era government to be a self-governing homeland for the Herero people. Waterberg National Park
Waterberg Plateau Park is a national park in central Namibia on the Waterberg Plateau, south-east of Otjiwarongo. The plateau and the national park are named after the prominent table mountain that rises from the plateau, the Waterberg (Afrikaans: ''Water Mountain''). The Waterberg Plateau is a particularly prominent landmark, elevating high above the plains of the Kalahari of Eastern Namibia. Waterberg Park and some of surrounding land were declared a Nature Reserve in 1972. As the plateau is largely inaccessible from beneath, several of Namibia's endangered animal species were relocated into the area during the early 1970s to protect them from predators and poaching to extinction. Namibia held elections for their local and regional councils on 27 November 2015. Ballots were cast using electronic voting. Electoral system Elections to regional councils are held using the first-past-the-post electoral system. Voters in each constituency elect one councillor to represent them on their regional council. Local authority councillors are elected by a system of proportional representation. Results Regional and local elections taken together elected 199 women out of the 499 available seats, partly because affirmative action for women is required by law in local authority elections.
