Ofotfjord
The Ofotfjord (; ) is a fjord in Nordland county, Norway. It is an inlet of the Norwegian Sea, located about north of the Arctic Circle. The long Ofotfjord is Norway's 12th longest fjord and it is also the 18th deepest, with a maximum depth of . In the English language and in many historical documents, this fjord is often referred to as the ''Narvik Fjord'' because the town of Narvik is located on the inner shores of the fjord, but this is not an official name of the fjord. The fjord is surrounded by mountains, some reaching , and even in Skjomen, where the '' Frostisen'' glacier can be seen. The only large lowland area is on parts of the northern shore, around Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes, although there are smaller areas near the fjord and in narrow valleys (for instance, the Narvik peninsula, where the harbour and city centre of Narvik is located). Battle Of Narvik
The Battles of Narvik were fought from 9 April to 8 June 1940, as a naval battle in Ofotfjord and as a land battle in the mountains surrounding the north Norwegian town of Narvik, as part of the Norwegian Campaign of the Second World War. The two naval battles in Ofotfjord on 10 April and 13 April were fought between the British Royal Navy and the German ''Kriegsmarine'', while the two-month land campaign was fought by Norwegian, French, British, and Polish troops against German mountain troops, shipwrecked ''Kriegsmarine'' sailors, and German paratroopers (''Fallschirmjäger'') from the 7th Air Division. Although defeated at sea off Narvik, losing control of the town of Narvik and being pushed back towards the Swedish border, the Germans eventually prevailed because of the Allied evacuation from Norway in June 1940 following the Battle of France. It is named after the main fjord, Ofotfjorden, which is at the center of this district. or is a glacier in Narvik Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is one of the larger plateau glaciers in Norway. Frostisen covers an area of about , and its elevation ranges from above sea level. The glacier lies near the Skjomen fjord, a branch of the Ofotfjorden, just southwest of the Narvik (town), town of Narvik. The village of Elvegård lies about east of the glacier. ''Populus tremula'' (commonly called aspen, common aspen, Eurasian aspen, European aspen, or quaking aspen) is a species of poplar native to cool temperate regions of the Old World. Description It is a substantial deciduous tree growing to tall by broad, with a trunk attaining over in diameter. The bark is pale greenish-grey and smooth on young trees with dark grey diamond-shaped lenticels, becoming dark grey and fissured on older trees. Skjomen
Skjomen () is a small fjord that branches off from the main Ofotfjorden in Narvik Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the Ofoten district in Northern Norway, just south of the Narvik (town), town of Narvik. The European route E6 highway crosses the Skjomen fjord over the Skjomen Bridge, just south of the mouth of the fjord. Skjomdalen A sheltered valley called "Skjomdalen" extends southward from the end of the fjord. The valley is inhabited by approximately 400 people. In physical geography, a fjord (also spelled fiord in New Zealand English; ) is a long, narrow sea inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier. Fjords exist on the coasts of Antarctica, the Arctic, and surrounding landmasses of the northern and southern hemispheres.
