Ofoten Prosti
Ofoten is a traditional district in Nordland county in Northern Norway. It consists of Evenes Municipality, Narvik Municipality, and Lødingen Municipality. It is named after the main fjord, Ofotfjorden, which is at the center of this district. The district was home to 29,968 residents in 2016, with almost half of the residents living in the town of Narvik. Geography Ofoten is characterized by fjords surrounded by many mountains with high, jagged peaks reaching up to in height. About 43% of the area lies above . Below elevations of there are forests. Only 11% of the land is below an elevation of . The mountains are high especially in the east. Fjord
In physical geography, a fjord (also spelled fiord in New Zealand English; ) is a long, narrow sea inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier. Fjords exist on the coasts of Antarctica, the Arctic, and surrounding landmasses of the northern and southern hemispheres. Norway's coastline is estimated to be long with its nearly 1,200 fjords, but only long excluding the fjords. Ankenes Municipality
Ankenes is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1884 until 1974. It encompassed most of the present-day Narvik Municipality, surrounding of the Narvik (town), town of Narvik which was once its own municipality. () was the name of a Norwegian self-governing municipality. The name was used from the establishment these municipalities in 1838 until the name fell out of use in 1863. The municipalities had their legal basis from two laws enacted on 14 January 1837. The laws established two types of ; one for cities () and one for rural districts (). Ofoten Municipality
Ofoten is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1884. The municipality included the areas on both sides of the inner part of the Ofotfjorden mostly in what is now Narvik Municipality and Evenes Municipality. The administrative centre of Ofoten was the village of Narvik (town), Narvik (which later became a town in 1902). Salten is a traditional district in Nordland county, Norway. It includes the municipalities of Gildeskål, Bodø, Beiarn, Saltdal, Fauske, Sørfold, Steigen, and Hamarøy. Gihtsejiegŋa is one of the largest glaciers in mainland Norway. It is located in Narvik Municipality in Nordland county, about southeast of the village of Kjøpsvik, on the border with Sweden. The name of the glacier comes from the Lule Sami language. The elevation of the glacier ranges from above sea level.
