Ofer Lifschitz
Ofer Lifschitz, ( he, עפר ליפשיץ) (born in kibbutz Masada, Israel in 1958) is an Israeli politician and head of Brit Olam. Lifschitz left Israel to travel in 1984, before settling in the United States in 1988. Kibbutz
A kibbutz ( he, קִבּוּץ / , lit. "gathering, clustering"; plural: kibbutzim / ) is an intentional community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. The first kibbutz, established in 1909, was Degania. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises. Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism and Zionism. In recent decades, some kibbutzim have been privatized and changes have been made in the communal lifestyle. A member of a kibbutz is called a ''kibbutznik'' ( he, קִבּוּצְנִיק / ; plural ''kibbutznikim'' or ''kibbutzniks''). In 2010, there were 270 kibbutzim in Israel with population of 126,000. Masada (kibbutz)
Masada ( he, מַסָּדָה) is a kibbutz in northern Israel. Located in the northern Jordan Valley near the Sea of Galilee, it falls under the jurisdiction of Emek HaYarden Regional Council. In it had a population of . Although still called a kibbutz, it privatized itself in 2006. Etymology The name of the kibbutz was taken from the epic poem "Masada" by Yitzhak Lamdan, itself named after the fortress of Masada by the Dead Sea. It has nothing to do with the Hebrew word for base or foundation, "massad". The fortress of Masada is called in Hebrew "Metzadá" (מצדה), but Yitzhak Lamdan, although writing in Hebrew, used the name as it is known from the works of Josephus, "Masada" (מסדה). Lamdan's poem was extremely influential among Zionist Jews at the time the kibbutz was established. Brit Olam (, lit., ''World Alliance'' or ''Eternal Covenant'') is a political party in Israel. Background and ideology Brit Olam is a joint Jewish–Arab party founded by Ofer Lifschitz in 2005. It stands for the foundation of a Palestinian state, separation of religion and state, raising the minimum wage, and improving the education system. It also aims to improve relations between Jews and Arabs in Israel, and emphasizes the need for social justice and cohesion. The party ran for the 2006 elections, with Lifschitz heading its list. However, they won only 2,011 votes (0.06%), failing to cross the 2% electoral threshold.
