Oedipus (DJ)
Edward Hyson, known professionally as Oedipus, is an American radio personality. He gained notoriety as the pink-haired DJ who created the first punk rock radio show in America, introducing punk and new wave music to Boston and to the country. Career Oedipus began his radio career in 1975 at MIT’s college station, WTBS (now WMBR), where he created the first punk rock radio show in America. His program featured early interviews with seminal bands such as The Ramones, Talking Heads, and The Damned, and he conducted on-air conversations with The Clash, Public Image Ltd, and Suicide. In 1977, Oedipus convinced WBCN to hire him as an announcer to bring his cutting edge sounds to the airwaves. In 1981 he was named Program Director, a position he held until he left in 2004. Under his tutelage, the station was recognized as an industry leader in breaking new music and received countless awards for its successes. Punk Rock
Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles with stripped-down instrumentation. Punk rock lyrics often explore anti-establishment and Anti-authoritarianism, anti-authoritarian themes. Rock 'n' Roll Rumble
The Rock 'n' Roll Rumble (now stylized as "Rock & Roll Rumble"; formerly the " WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble"), begun in 1979, is a Greater Boston " battle of the bands" competition sponsored by Boston Emissions, an online local music program formerly broadcast on WBCN (from 1987 until 2008) and WZLX (from 2009 until 2018). The Rumble remains the longest running event of its kind in the US. Its predecessors were the Bicentennial Tournament of the Bands held in 1976 at The Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and co-sponsored by WBCN and Inn Square Men's Bar, as well as 1978's First Annual Spring Rock 'n' Roll Festival co-sponsored by WBCN and the ''Boston Phoenix''. Stop Handgun Violence
Stop Handgun Violence is a Boston, Massachusetts-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to reduce and prevent injuries and deaths caused by firearms in the United States. The group advocates personal responsibility, public awareness, stronger legislation, increased gun manufacturer responsibility, and strict law enforcement. Stop Handgun Violence was founded in 1995 by Boston developer John Rosenthal with Michael Kennedy, son of assassinated former U.S. attorney general and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy. Rosenthal says that he was inspired to cofound the group when "I learned that 15 kids under 19 died every day in this country from the only consumer product in America that is not regulated." Marty Walsh
Martin Joseph Walsh (born April 10, 1967) is an American politician and trade union official who served as the 58th mayor of Boston from 2014 to 2021 and as the 29th United States Secretary of Labor from 2021 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Walsh resigned from his position as the US Secretary of Labor in March 2023 in order to accept a position as executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association.
