Ochiai Station (Hokkaidō)
was a railway station on the Nemuro Main Line, operated by Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido). It was located in Minamifurano, Hokkaido, Japan, and was numbered T37. Nemuro Main Line
is a railway line in Hokkaido. Following the closure of the Furano-Shintoku section on 1 April 2024 the line is operated by Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) in two sections, being Takikawa to Furano and Shintoku to Nemuro (including Obihiro and Kushiro). Nemuro is the most easterly situated station on the Japanese rail system. Services Local trains operate between Takikawa and Furano 9 times per day. Prior to August 2016 four trains per day operated between Furano and Higashi-Shikagoe. Due to typhoon damage sustained that month, the line was closed between Higashi-Shikagoe and Shintoku, and passengers transferred to a bus. On 1 April 2024 the Furano-Shintoku section was closed, splitting the line in two. Zig Zag (railway)
A railway zig zag or switchback is a railway operation in which a train is required to switch its direction of travel in order to continue its journey. While this may be required purely from an operations standpoint, it is also ideal for climbing steep gradients with minimal need for tunnels and heavy earthworks. For a short distance (corresponding to the middle leg of the letter "Z"), the direction of travel is reversed, before the original direction is resumed. Some switchbacks do not come in pairs, and the train may then need to travel backwards for a considerable distance.
