Obdam () is a village and former municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and the region of West-Frisia. The municipality ceased to exist on 1 January 2007 when it merged with Wester-Koggenland to form the new municipality of Koggenland. Jacob Van Wassenaer Obdam
Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam (1610 – 13 June 1665) was a Dutch States Navy officer and nobleman who became lieutenant admiral, and supreme commander of the Dutch navy. He had as official titles Banner Lord of Wassenaer, and Lord Obdam, Hensbroek, Spanbroek, Opmeer, Zuidwijk and Kernhem. The name ''Obdam'' was then also spelled as ''Opdam''. Contemporary English sources typically refer to him as ''Admiral Opdam'' or ''Lord Obdam'' because it was not until 1657 that he bought the Wassenaar Estate from relatives and thus acquired its title. Modern Dutch sources sometimes less correctly insert a second "van" between "Wassenaer" and "Obdam" or use the modern spelling "Wassenaar". Van Wassenaer
The Van Wassenaer family is the name of an old Dutch noble family. It was first mentioned in the County of Holland on 3 November 1200. They are one of the few original noble families from Holland that has survived to this day. Members of the family carry the title of count or baron. Origin of the name The family was already noble from earliest times ("Uradel"). According to family legend, the name may be taken from the crescent (''wassende'') moon on the family coat of arms, borrowed from an Arabian banner that a member of the van Wassenaer family obtained while on a crusade. Hensbroek
Hensbroek is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Koggenland, and lies about 4 km east of Heerhugowaard. Overview The village was first mentioned around 1312 as Hensbroec, and means "swampy land belonging to Hen (person)". Hensbroek developed in the Late Middle Ages after a peat excavation settlement to the west had been abandoned. The village burnt down in 1648. The Dutch Reformed church is a single aisled church with needle spire which was built between 1657 and 1658, because the medieval church had burnt down in 1579. The ''polder'' mill was built in 1866. In 1908, it was decommissioned after a pumping station was installed, but returned to service in 1934 when the pumping station became defective, and stayed on duty until 1948 when a new Diesel powered pumping station was operational. Koggenland () is a Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality in North Holland province and the region of West Friesland (region), West-Frisia of the Netherlands. Berkmeer
Berkmeer is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Koggenland, and lies about 5 km east of Heerhugowaard. The hamlet was first mentioned around 1631 as De Berck meer, and refers to the lake which was ''poldered'' in 1636. The name means "birch lake". Berkmeer does not have place name signs. Hoorn Railway Station
Hoorn is the main railway station of the town of Hoorn, Netherlands. Overview The station opened on 20 May 1884 as part of the Zaandam–Hoorn railway line. On 6 June 1885 the line was extended to Enkhuizen. Other lines that opened were the Hoorn - Medemblik line in 1887, and the Hoorn - Heerhugowaard line in October 1898. The station has a ticket hall, a florist, a music shop and a restaurant. In 1985 another station opened in Hoorn, to the east, Hoorn Kersenboogerd.
