OSGi Specification Implementations
The OSGi framework is a standardized module system and service platform for the Java programming language. The OSGi standards are defined in thOSGi Specification Project at Eclipseand published in OSGi specification documents such as the Core and Compendium specifications. These specifications contain chapters each of which describe a specific OSGi standard. This article contains a list of available implementations of OSGi standards, both commercial and open source implementations are included. Feel free to add mentions to additional implementations. Implementations realize specification chapter(s) from the OSGi specification documents. Core Specification * Latest Specification Release: R8 * Specification chapters: 2-10, 50-60, 101, 701 Specifications implemented by OSGi core frameworks. A compliant OSGi Framework must ''at least'' implement chapters 3-10 and 53-58. Compendium Specification * Latest Specification Release: R8 * Specification chapters: 100-117, 119-123, 125-128, ...

OSGi
OSGi is an open specification and open source project under the Eclipse Foundation. It is a continuation of the work done by the OSGi Alliance (formerly known as the Open Services Gateway initiative), which was an open standards organization for computer software founded in March 1999. The foundation originally specified and maintained the OSGi standard. The alliance transferred its work to the Eclipse Foundation at the end of 2020. The OSGi specification describes a modular system and a service platform for the Java programming language that implements a complete and dynamic component model, something that does not exist in standalone Java or VM environments. It has a service-oriented architecture based on micro services each implemented as an extended Java class file archive ( JAR (file format)). Description OSGi is built around a service-oriented architecture. Applications or components, come in the form of bundles for deployment, can be remotely installed, started, sto ...

Open Source
Open source is source code that is made freely available for possible modification and redistribution. Products include permission to use the source code, design documents, or content of the product. The open-source model is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. A main principle of open-source software development is peer production, with products such as source code, blueprints, and documentation freely available to the public. The open-source movement in software began as a response to the limitations of proprietary code. The model is used for projects such as in open-source appropriate technology, and open-source drug discovery. Open source promotes universal access via an open-source or free license to a product's design or blueprint, and universal redistribution of that design or blueprint. Before the phrase ''open source'' became widely adopted, developers and producers have used a variety of other terms. ''Open source'' gai ...

Apache Felix
Apache Felix is an open source implementation of the OSGi Core Release 6 framework specification. The initial codebase was donated from the Oscar project at ObjectWeb. The developers worked on Felix for a full year and have made various improvements while retaining the original footprint and performance. On June 21, 2007, the project graduated from incubation as a top level project and is considered the smallest size software at Apache Software Foundation. Running Felix To run Apache Felix OSGi, you need to download the felix-framework-4.x.x.tar.gz or felix-framework-4.x.x.zip compressed file from the site. Once you have extracted the Felix framework distribution, from the command line in the extracted directory type the following: After bundles are installed and running, typing a command like help from the console will display all available commands, which are: *bundlelevel ... , - set or get bundle start level. *cd ">base-URL> - change or display ...

Eclipse Equinox
In computing, Equinox is a sub-project of the Eclipse project that provides a certified implementation of the OSGi R4.x core framework specification. It is a module runtime that allows developers to implement an application as a set of "bundles" using the common services infrastructure. Equinox began as a project to replace the original Eclipse plug-in runtime in version 3.0 of Eclipse. It was further developed to meet the needs of the Eclipse community. The adaptations were made into the OSGi specification process, with many being incorporated in the R4 release of the OSGi framework specification. Since then, Equinox has been the reference implementation for the OSGi framework specification. JBoss
WildFly, formerly known as JBoss AS, or simply JBoss, is an application server written by JBoss, now developed by Red Hat. WildFly is written in Java and implements the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) specification. It runs on multiple platforms. WildFly is free and open-source software, subject to the requirements of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL), version 2.1. Origin In 1999, Marc Fleury started a free software project named ''EJB-OSS'' (stands for ''Enterprise Java Bean Open Source Software'') implementing the EJB API from J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition). Sun Microsystems asked the project to stop using the trademarked ''EJB'' within its name. ''EJB-OSS'' was then renamed to ''JBOSS'', then ''JBoss'' later. On November 20, 2014, JBoss Application Server was renamed WildFly. The JBoss Community and other Red Hat JBoss products like JBoss Enterprise Application Platform were not renamed. Licensing and pricing JBoss EAP itself is open sour ...
