Three-letter Acronym
A three-letter acronym (TLA), or three-letter abbreviation is, as the phrase suggests, an abbreviation consisting of three letters. The term has a special status among abbreviations and to some is considered humorous since the term ''TLA'' is itself a three-letter acronym; it is an autological word. Most TLAs are initialisms (the initial letter of each word of a phrase), but most are not acronyms in the strict sense since they are pronounced by saying each letter, as in '' APA'' . Some are true acronyms (pronounced as a word) such as CAT (as in CAT scan) which is pronounced as the animal. Examples * Academic testing: ACT, SAT * Air Navigation Services ( ANS): AIS, ATC, ATM, ATS, CNS, FIS, MET, and SAR * IATA airport codes: LAX and LHR * Business: CEO, CFO, and other C-level officers * Canine registries: AKC and CKC * Chemistry, biology, and pharmaceuticals: GMO, LSD, and MSG * Clinical medicine: CAD, CHF, PSA, and SOB * Communications shorthand: LOL ... Orbiting Astronomical Observatory
The Orbiting Astronomical Observatory (OAO) satellites were a series of four American space observatories launched by NASA between 1966 and 1972, managed by NASA Chief of Astronomy Nancy Grace Roman. These observatories, including the first successful space telescope, provided the first high-quality observations of many objects in ultraviolet light. Although two OAO missions were failures, the success of the other two increased awareness within the astronomical community of the benefits of space-based observations, and led to the instigation of the Hubble Space Telescope. OAO-1 The first Orbiting Astronomical Observatory was launched successfully on 8 April 1966, carrying instruments to detect ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma ray emission. Before the instruments could be activated, a power failure resulted in the termination of the mission after three days. The spacecraft was out of control, so that the solar panels could not be deployed to recharge the batteries that would s ... Odessey And Oracle
''Odessey and Oracle'' is the second studio album by the English rock band the Zombies. It was released on 19April 1968, by CBS Records in the UK and on 15July 1968, by Date Records in the US. The album was recorded primarily between June and August 1967 at EMI (now Abbey Road Studios) and Olympic Studios in London. The Zombies, having been dropped from Decca Records, financed these sessions independently. After signing with CBS, two singles and later the album itself were released to critical and commercial indifference, and the band quietly dissolved. A third single from the album, "Time of the Season", became a surprise hit in the United States in early 1969 after CBS staff producer Al Kooper recommended it be released on Date Records. The album gradually achieved critical praise and a cult following, and has since become one of the most acclaimed albums of the 1960s. It was ranked 80th on ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2003. Wh ... The player assumes the role of Abe as he attempts a perilous quest to emancipate his downtrodden people. ''Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee'' was widely acclaimed for having innovative gameplay, good art direction and engaging cutscenes; however, its difficult learning curve and system of only saving at checkpoints received criticism.
