''Nærbuxnaverksmiðjan'' ('The Underpants Factory') is a children's novel by Arndís Þórarinsdóttir, published in Reykjavík in 2018 by Mál og menning.. Form The novel is a short prose narrative in ten chapters, each of which includes a full-page monochrome illustration by Sigmundur Breiðfjörð Þorgeirsson and a number of smaller illustrations of different, sometimes outlandish, kinds of underpants. Chapters begin with a subheading often including pants-related puns on well known Icelandic proverbs and phrases, such as 'blindur er brókarlaus maður' ('a trouserless person is blind') for ''blindur er bóklaus maður'' ('a bookless person is blind'). Summary The protagonists are Gutti, the most diligent child in his school, and Ólína, the most troublesome. Near the beginning of the story, Gutti learns that the underpants factory that dominates his neighbourhood has just been closed by the authorities. Arndís Þórarinsdóttir
Arndís Þórarinsdóttir (born 1982) is an Icelandic children's author. Biography Arndís studied at Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík, and took a BA in literature at the University of Iceland, and an MA in creative writing at Goldsmiths, University of London. She took a further MA in creative writing at the University of Iceland in 2018, with a thesis entitled ''Vetur fram á vor: Skáldsaga fyrir börn'' ("From Winter to Spring: A Novel for Children"). She is the head of the ancient and popular culture departments of the ''Bókasafn Kópavogs'' (Kópavogur Public Library). She had joined the board of IBBY Iceland by 2008, and was its president around 2011. Mál og menning (, ) is an Icelandic publishing house, established in 1937. The press has published the work of many of Iceland's best known authors, among them Þórbergur Þórðarson, Jóhannes úr Kötlum, Svava Jakobsdóttir, Þórarinn Eldjárn, and Einar Kárason.
