Nuussuaq (district)
Nuussuaq is a district of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, It is located in the northern part of the city, west and southwest of Nuuk Airport, approximately outside the city center. History The district was established in the late 1970s, and has rapidly expanded since then, becoming the most populated neighborhood home to the majority of apartment buildings in the city and approximately 6.000 people. After Qinngorput, it is the newest district of Nuuk, expanding northwards towards the airport. Nuuk
Nuuk (; , formerly ) is the capital and most populous city of Greenland, an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the territory's largest cultural and economic center. It is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2025, it had a population of 20,113more than a third of the territory's populationmaking it one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population. The city was founded in 1728 by the Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede when he relocated from the earlier Hope Colony (), where he had arrived in 1721; the governor Claus Paarss was part of the relocation. The new colony was placed at the Inuit settlement of Nûk and was named ''Godthaab'' ("Good Hope"). "Nuuk" is the Greenlandic word for "cape" () and is commonly found in Greenlandic place names. Sermersooq
Sermersooq () is a municipality in Greenland, formed on 1 January 2009 from five previous, smaller municipalities. Its administrative seat is the city of Nuuk (formerly called Godthåb), the capital of Greenland, and it is the most populous municipality in the country, with 23,123 inhabitants as of January 2020. Nuuk Airport
Nuuk Airport (, , formerly ; ) is an international airport serving Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The airport is the hub and technical base for Air Greenland, the flag carrier airline of Greenland, linking the capital with almost all towns in the country and international destinations. International routes are also provided by Icelandair on a year-round basis as well as Scandinavian Airlines, SAS and United Airlines on a seasonal basis. Most international journeys to or from Greenland pass through this airport. The airport was originally constructed for STOL-capable aircraft in 1979. In 2024, the airport was comprehensively rebuilt and expanded, including a runway extension and a new terminal, which allows larger jet aircraft to serve more international destinations. Qinngorput
Qinngorput is a district of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. It was incorporated into the city in 2005. Qinngorput is located to the east and northeast of the Nuuk Centrum district and south of Nuuk Airport, approximately outside of the city centre. Originally a popular area for hunting and camping, Qinngorput was developed as part of Nuuk’s modern urban planning strategy to accommodate the city’s growth. The neighborhood has attracted a predominantly young population, with a particular focus on families with school-aged children, making it the youngest district in terms of average age in the city. Although still sparsely populated, there are plans for 1,200 apartments and a long-term capacity of up to 10,000 inhabitants. The majority of housing is privately owned, and new developments continue to rise along the southeastern shores of Malenebugten. University Of Greenland
The University of Greenland (; ) is Greenland's only university. It is in the capital city of Nuuk. Most courses are taught in Danish, a few in Greenlandic and classes by exchange lecturers often in English. The university had an enrollment of 205 students in 2018, composed of mostly Greenlandic inhabitants. Nuup Bussii
Nuup Bussii A/S is a bus company in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, providing public transport services for the city. As of 2014, Nuup Bussii had 31 employees, operating 16 buses with a distinct yellow color, as well as five other small vehicles. History Prior to the establishment of public services, the ground transport in the city was operated by private entrepreneurs. The volatility and alleged unreliability of the services prompted the former Nuuk Municipality to regulate the traffic, and establish a public transportation company, overseen by the municipal authorities. Nuup Bussii was then founded on 26 September 1980. In 2012 the buses transported more than 2 million passengers around the city of Nuuk. Since 2009 Nuup Bussii provides city transport services in Nuuk for the new Sermersooq municipality, linking the town centre with the outlying districts and neighborhoods of Nuussuaq, Qinngorput, as well as Qernertunnguit in Quassussuup Tungaa.
