Nurse Marjorie
''Nurse Marjorie'' is a 1920 American silent film, silent drama film directed by William Desmond Taylor and starring Mary Miles Minter. Based on a 1906 play, ''Nurse Marjorie'', by Israel Zangwill, with a scenario by Julia Crawford Ivers, it is one of approximately a dozen of Minter's films known to survive today, and one of even fewer readily available for the general public to view. Plot As well as being readily available to view, the plot is described in various film magazine summaries and reviews. Lady Marjorie Killonan (Minter) is the headstrong Anglo-Irish daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Donegal. She has recently completed charitable work nursing the poor, but now intends to become a professional nurse to the rich. William Desmond Taylor
William Desmond Taylor (born William Cunningham Deane-Tanner; 26 April 1872 – 1 February 1922) was an Anglo-Irish-American film director and actor. A popular figure in the growing Cinema of the United States, Hollywood motion picture colony of the 1910s and early 1920s, Taylor directed fifty-nine silent films between 1914 and 1922 and acted in twenty-seven between 1913 and 1915. Vera Lewis
Vera Lewis (June 10, 1873 – February 8, 1956) was an American film and stage actress, beginning in the silent film era. She appeared in more than 180 films from 1915 to 1947. She was married to actor Ralph Lewis. Biography She was born in Manhattan, where she began acting in stage productions. Her film career started in 1915 with the film '' Hypocrites'', which starred Myrtle Stedman and Courtenay Foote. From 1915 to 1929, she appeared in 63 silent films, including the film classic ''Intolerance'' (1916), where she played the "old maid" Miss Jenkins. Unlike many silent film stars, she made a smooth transition to sound films, starting with her 1930 appearance in '' Wide Open'', starring Patsy Ruth Miller and Edward Everett Horton. Joe Murphy (actor)
Joseph Murphy (May 16, 1877 – July 31, 1961) was an American comic stage actor. He went on to become a silent film actor, notably playing Andy Gump in the shorts The Gumps during the mid-1920s. His unusual tall, thin stature and extraordinary facial features were instantly recognizable. Personal life Joe Murphy was born Joseph J. Murphy on 16 May 1877 in San Jose, California. His mother Anna (Mahoney) and father John Murphy were married in Michigan, January 13, 1875 before moving to San Jose, California. On October 30 ,1920, his son Russell, aged 16, was shot and killed by a police officer after he and his friends were mistaken for robbers. Murphy filed a $18,000 lawsuit against a patrolman of the L.A. Police Department, after criminal charges against the police were dropped by the district attorney claiming that the officer killed the boy in the line of duty. Joseph Hazelton
Joseph H. Hazelton (c. 1853 – October 6, 1936), aka Joseph Hazleton, was an American stage and film actor. He appeared in 30 films between 1912 and 1922. He claimed to have witnessed the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, as a boy. Life and career Hazelton debuted on stage as a child when a production at Grover's Theater (now the National Theatre) in Washington, D.C. needed a boy to play a young prince in '' King John''. Thereafter, he continued to stay around the theater, doing odd jobs and handing out programs. In 1910, he was a member of the Columbia Players in Washington, D.C. When the Pasadena Community Playhouse presented ''Our American Cousin'' in 1930, Hazelton spoke during intermission of each performance, relating what he witnessed as he observed the assassination. Al Flosso
Albert Levinson (better known by his stage name Al Flosso; Oct. 10, 1895 – May 13, 1976) was an American magician and entertainer. Career Levinson was born in Brooklyn, New York, and took his stage name from a vernacular or slang term for cotton candy: "floss".Montague Chadbourne, conversations with Mr. Flosso, c. 1960–1973, and with Jack Flosso, c. 1967–1994, included in essays written for the combined exhibition of the Chadbourne Thaumaturgium and the Main Street Museum, White River Junction, Vermont, 2008. At 14, Flosso was working in circuses and carnivals around the United States. He soon became a resident performer at a sideshow at Coney Island, where he also performed Punch and Judy puppet shows.
