The Nura (, ''Nūra''; ) is a major watercourse of northeast-central Kazakhstan. It is long and drains an area of . Course The river rises in the Kyzyltas mountains, 4 km south of Qarakolboldy, which is a subrange of the Kazakh Uplands and flows initially north-northwestwards for about . It then turns to the west and flows in that direction for , then southwest for . The Nura turns north near Esengeldi, Akmola Region, Esengeldi for about , eventually turning southwest as it draws close to Astana near the river Irtysh. From there, it flows southwest for almost through a series of lakes, including Sholakshalkar and Korgalzhyn (lake), Korgalzhyn, finally ending in the endorheic Lake Tengiz. The river's largest tributaries are the Sherubainura, Ulken Kundyzdy, Akbastau and Ashchysu (Nura), Ashchysu. It is heavily used for irrigation and municipal water supply. Nura District
Nura District (, ) is a district of Karaganda Region in central Kazakhstan. The administrative center of the district is the settlement of Nura. The district has a population of 22,569 as of 2019. Geography The district is located in the Kazakh Uplands. Rivers Kulanotpes and Sonaly, and lakes Kerey, Kypshak, Kiyakty and Shoshkakol are located in the district. History During the 1890s, a number of Ukrainians, Russians, and Germans began constructing settlements in the area, which was already home to approximately 330 villages of the native Kazakh people. On April 19, 1923, by order of the Kirghiz SSR, the Nurinsk Volost was created as part of the Akmola Uyezd. On March 10, 1932, the Nurinsk Volost joined the newly created Karagandy Oblast. Nura became the district's administrative center in 1928. Nura () is a village in Alay District, Osh Region of Kyrgyzstan, at the point where the A371 road from China turns northwest to go over the pass into the Alay Valley. Its population was 1,101 in 2021. It is at the mouth of a valley that goes south into some glaciated mountains on the Chinese border. Nursu (also, Nurs and Nur-su) is a village and municipality in the Shahbuz District of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. It is located 8 km in the north-east from the district center, on the foothill area.
