Nun Danket Alle Gott, BWV 192
(Now thank ye all our God), BWV 192, is a church cantata for Trinity Sunday composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig in 1730. It is an incomplete cantata, because its tenor part is missing. It is a chorale cantata, setting the unmodified three stanzas of Martin Rinckart's "Nun danket alle Gott" (" Now Thank We All Our God"). It has been regarded as an expansion of Bach's chorale cantata cycle. History and text Bach composed ''Nun danket alle Gott'' as a chorale cantata for Trinity, setting the unmodified text of the three stanzas of Martin Rinckart's hymn of thanksgiving " Nun danket alle Gott". There are 52 chorale cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach surviving in at least one complete version. Around 40 of these were composed during his second year as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, which started after Trinity Sunday 4 June 1724, and form the backbone of his Bach's chorale cantata cycle, chorale cantata cycle. The eldest known Bach cantata, cantata by Bach, an early version of ''Christ lag in Todes Banden, BWV 4, Christ lag in Todes Banden'', Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis, BWV 4, presumably written in 1707, was a chorale cantata. The last chorale cantata he wrote in his second year in Leipzig was Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1, ''Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern'', BWV 1, first performed on Palm Sunday, 25 March 1725. Ritornello
A ritornello (Italian; "little return") is a recurring passage in Renaissance music and Baroque music for orchestra or chorus. Early history The earliest use of the term "ritornello" in music referred to the final lines of a fourteenth-century madrigal, which were usually in a rhyme scheme and meter that contrasted with the rest of the song. Scholars suggest that the word "ritornello" comes either from the Italian word ''ritorno'' (meaning return), or from ''tornando'' (meaning turnaround or flourish). Chorale fantasia is a type of large composition based on a chorale melody, both works for Pipe organ, organ, and vocal settings, for example the opening movements of Chorale cantata (Bach), Bach's chorale cantatas, with the chorale melody as a cantus firmus. A bass is a type of classical male singing voice and has the lowest vocal range of all voice types. Günter Raphael
Günter Raphael (30 April 1903 – 19 October 1960) was a German composer. Born in Berlin, Raphael was the grandson of composer Albert Becker (composer), Albert Becker. His first symphony was premiered by Wilhelm Furtwängler in 1926 in Leipzig with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Gewandhaus Orchestra. From 1926 to 1934 he taught in Leipzig, but illness and the rise of Fascism – he was declared a "half-Jew" – made this difficult for him. He received the Franz Liszt Award for composition in 1948. His students include Kurt Hessenberg. His compositions include five symphony, symphonies, concertos for violin and for organ, six string quartets, numerous solos and duos for strings and winds with and without piano of which several have been recorded. Joh. Seb. Bach's Werke () is the Bach Gesellschaft's collected edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions, published in 61 volumes in the second half of the 19th century. The series is also known as Bach-Gesellschaft edition (; BGA), or as ''Bach-Gesamtausgabe'' (BG; ). It is a German-language edition: title pages and notes by editors are exclusively in German. A supplemental volume was published in 1926, a quarter of a century after the Bach Gesellschaft's dissolution. Another late addition to the series was Max Schneider (music historian), Max Schneider's 1935 revision of the fourth volume. Alfred Dürr
Alfred Dürr (3 March 1918 – 7 April 2011) was a German musicologist. He was a principal editor of the Neue Bach-Ausgabe, the second edition of the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Professional career Dürr studied musicology and Classical philology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen from 1945 to 1950. He wrote his thesis about Bach's early Bach cantata, cantatas. From 1951 until his retirement in 1983 he was an employee of the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen, West Germany, from 1962 to 1981 its deputy director. His work involved collaboration with colleagues in East Germany. He was a principal editor of the Neue Bach-Ausgabe, a project which was divided between the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute and the Bach-Archiv Leipzig in East Germany.
